About The Position

The Component Design Engineer – CMC role supports the design, definition, manufacture, and verification of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) components for technology demonstrators, and current and future products. CMCs are a key technology for the future of aviation, promising improved performance and reduced operating costs. This role will operate within a cross-functional team consisting of engineers (Project, Component Design, Mechanical Integrity (analytics), Manufacturing, and Materials) and modelers. The CMC team is spread across the globe in Indianapolis (Indiana), Cypress (California), and Derby (UK). This role requires a highly motivated and committed individual with the ability to adapt and drive teams to accomplish stretch goals, advancing new technologies in novel ways and embracing new ways of working to yield impactful results. Recognized as an authoritative source of technical expertise and advice in a local area within a business and viewed as a key member of the broader team of technical expertise by senior capability leadership. May be a specialist with depth and/or breadth of knowledge in their own discipline or field or may be a specialist in Rolls-Royce gas turbine products and solutions and how they are differentiated from the competition. Generates business benefits through the application of specialist technical knowledge within their immediate area of expertise. Represents a critical resource to the “run and maintain” activity of a business, taking an active role in resolving current problems. Supports other technical specialists to advance knowledge in their capability area.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 5+ years of experience, OR Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 3+ years of experience, OR PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • Experience with component design methods, tools, and practices, including CAD (NX Unigraphics or equivalent), Teamcenter, Metaphase PDM, and Systems Engineering tools
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and tolerance stacks
  • New product introduction (NPI) project or equivalent product design, verification, and certification experience

Responsibilities

  • Work with and leads a cross-functional team to design world-class, cutting-edge turbomachinery components
  • Deliver models, definitions, and analyses of turbomachinery components and interfacing metallic hardware
  • Perform trade studies to optimize design solutions and document design processes per standard work practices
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering to implement Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and disposition non-confirming hardware
  • Prepare for and lead technical design reviews to present design solutions to all required stakeholders
  • Leads a cross-functional team to support design, integration, planning, and execution of verification activities, including analyses, rig and engine testing of turbomachinery component solutions
