About The Position

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. All employees who apply for a posted position must notify their supervisors that they have applied. Employees who have not been in their current positions for at least one year or who are in a position with specific requirements beyond one year, must obtain approval from their supervisor before applying. This position will support FEU’s NERC PRC-005 Maintenance program, substation practices, and FEU’s Compliance and Industry Engagement activities. This entails providing technical support and subject matter equipment expertise of electrical maintenance practices and methods, substation safety guidelines, utility industry standards, and regulatory compliance requirements. The reporting location can be any of the FE facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of Engineering experience is required.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must possess the ability to continue to learn and grow, work across FirstEnergy, and deliver results
  • Experience in analyzing complex problems and demonstrating good judgment in decision making is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with multiple departments in multiple locations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to perform in a professional manner including the ability to make formal technical presentations to various management levels.
  • Experience in leading projects, process/project development, planning/analysis, and performance reporting required.
  • Model active learning through continuing to develop breadth of knowledge, skills, and perspective.
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.

  • Knowledge of electrical engineering, transmission substation equipment, transmission system protection and transmission system operations required.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Must possess a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
  • Minimal travel to company locations (may include overnight travel).
  • Valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.
  • Minimum of 5 (five) years of Engineering experience is required.
  • Engineer IV will be expected to work at a higher level of responsibility and with greater self-direction.

Nice To Haves

  • A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
  • A working knowledge of electrical engineering, transmission substation equipment, transmission system protection and transmission system operations are desired
  • Prior experience with root cause analysis, Six Sigma and / or statistical analysis is desired
  • Knowledge of the electric transmission system, reliability standards and regional transmission organizations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of NERC and RF standards and policies of the electric utility industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements from both state and federal agencies that impact the design, maintenance and operations of transmission and distribution substations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of general compliance documentation and audit procedures as well as Regulatory audit processes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with any or all is preferred: EMS / Cascade / PowerBase / RTS / iTOA (Outage Application) / Coupa / PowerBI / reading substation prints/schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Providing support and oversight to FE regulatory compliance commitments, specifically NERC substation maintenance requirements and state maintenance requirements.
  • Reviewing and following up on maintenance orders to identify equipment issues or incomplete documentation.
  • Conducting or reviewing Apparent or Root Cause analysis related to maintenance compliance issues.
  • Providing ad-hoc training to new personnel on NERC compliance responsibilities.
  • Support the development and modification of FirstEnergy Substation Maintenance Practices and other technical documents.
  • Participating in industry events as a subject matter expert.
  • Supporting the emergency plan through participation in assigned storm duties, including hazard responding.
  • Creating an environment of accountability and a sense of urgency for meeting agreed-upon expectations/deadlines.
  • Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of exposures, industry regulations, and operating experiences.
  • Must possess the ability to deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Mentoring Rotational Engineers and Co-Ops that enter the department.
