The Complex Safety Manager provides oversight for the entire correctional complex in areas that include fire and life safety, environmental health, injury prevention and compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations. Develops, implements, and/or manages all policies and programs in the area of safety management. Monitors compliance with safety policies and provides training and direction on proper procedures. Supervises and directs subordinate staff to accomplish program goals and requirements. Manages all aspects of the safety management program for the correctional complex to include, but not limited to, physical safety and injury prevention, fire safety, environmental health, regulatory compliance. Both personally conducts safety inspections, investigations, training and other relevant activities, and directs and assigns the work of subordinates in those activities. Identifying critical first response actions needed, briefing facility command staff, and notifying relevant regulatory agencies and local authorities, in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies. Prepares and conducts briefings and training programs, and writes reports. With the subordinate safety manager, designs and conducts safety training for staff and inmates/residents. Ensures staff training and corrective action follow-ups are completed. Monitors the fire protection systems for the complex including integrated systems involving suppression, detection, and electrical and electronic alarm systems; design standards and codes for fire protection engineering techniques and practices; human responses to emergency situations; and fire tests and measurements. Prevents, identifies, and mitigates fire hazards. Investigates fires, develops corrective actions, tracks trends, and shares lessons learned.
