About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Gymnastics, the Competitive Gymnastics Head Coach is responsible for the vision, development, supervision, and daily execution of the YMCA’s competitive gymnastics program. This role provides hands-on coaching, oversees training plans and meet preparation, develops and mentors coaching staff, ensures program safety and compliance, supports enrollment and retention, and fosters a positive, athlete-centered culture aligned with the YMCA’s mission and core values.

Requirements

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent; college education preferred
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience coaching competitive gymnastics.
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and Safe Sport Certifications required
  • Strong technical knowledge of gymnastics skills, rules, and safety protocols
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire youth athletes while modeling YMCA core values
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Proven experience supervising assistant coaches and/or volunteers
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage schedules, meet logistics, and program goals
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel for competitions as required
  • Ability to demonstrate gymnastics skills and actively spot athletes
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs
  • Ability to respond swiftly and appropriately in emergencies, following the YMCA’s emergency action plan
  • Exposure to a loud, fast-paced gym environment is expected
  • Ability to plan, lead and demonstrate a range of gymnastic activities.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; lift, bend, carry, reach, stoop, push, pull.
  • Noise level in the work environment will vary depending on the activity level in the gymnastics and ninja center.
  • Visual and auditory ability and willingness to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency and follow the emergency action plan.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience coaching optional level gymnastics (USAG Levels 6-10) is strongly preferred
  • Prior experience supervising assistant coaches is strongly preferred
  • Background as a competitive gymnast is a plus
  • Proficiency with common administrative tools (Google Workspace, TeamSnap, or similar systems) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership & Athlete Development Lead and manage the YMCA competitive gymnastics team, ensuring athlete safety, engagement, skill progression, and positive competitive experiences.
  • Provide leadership oversight of pre-competitive classes to support long-term athlete development and future enrollment into the competitive program.
  • Develop and implement season-long training plans, practice schedules, and routines aligned with USAG standards and YMCA values.
  • Coach gymnasts in a group setting (typically 6–10 athletes), utilizing appropriate progressions, spotting techniques, and skill development strategies.
  • Monitor athlete progress and performance; communicate regularly and professionally with parents regarding development, expectations, and concerns.
  • Staff Leadership & Supervision Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise assistant coaches; provide ongoing feedback, support, and performance coaching.
  • Ensure adequate staffing and coach attendance for practices, meets, and events.
  • Attend and participate in coaches’ meetings, staff training sessions, and required YMCA events.
  • Operations, Scheduling & Meet Management Coordinate practice schedules, competition calendars, and meet logistics, including travel expectations and coach coverage.
  • Attend competitions in appropriate team attire, modeling professionalism and adherence to YMCA conduct and child safety guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate program records, including attendance, athlete assessments, staff certifications, and timesheets.
  • Program Growth & Financial Stewardship Achieve participation and budgetary goals for both pre-competitive and competitive team programs.
  • Support program promotion, gymnast recruitment, and retention efforts in collaboration with YMCA leadership.
  • Contribute to YMCA fundraising efforts and special events as required.
  • Relationship & Community Engagement Develop collaborative relationships with parents, volunteers, YMCA colleagues, and community partners.
  • Serve as a positive representative of the YMCA at competitions, events, and within the broader gymnastics community.
