About The Position

Coordinates Marine Chemist inspections for vessels undergoing repair. Uses gas detection meters and gas detection equipment as required by OSHA where a Marine Chemist as required. Performs daily calibration checks of gas detection meters in accordance with the manufactures instructions, OSHA 1915, NAVSEA standard items, NFPA 306, and BAE NSR policies. Inspects and tests atmospheres of enclosed and confined spaces iaw OSHA 1915, NAVSEA standard items, NFPA 306, and BAE NSR policies. Ensures that conditions annotated on the Marine Chemist certificate are maintained as required by OSHA 1915, NAVSEA standard items, NFPA 306, and BAE NSR policies. Posts and updates the Competent Persons Log of and Inspections (LOI) with the conditions for entry and/or hot work daily and as often as required. Review hot work requests, inspects hot work areas, and approves/denies hot work as requested in compliance with OSHA 1915, NAVSEA standard items, NFPA 306, and BAE NSR policies. Communicate Competent Person and Marine Chemist Certificate requirements (as applicable). Performs safety compliance inspections and documents findings iaw OSHA 1915, NAVSEA standard items, NFPA 306, and BAE NSR policies. Participate in emergency drills as required on board ships and at facilities throughout the shipyard. Respond to safety and environmental emergency situations and take rapid actions as needed.

Requirements

  • Typically requires High School diploma or GED or the overall equivalent;
  • Current OSHA Maritime 10-Hour training required
  • Shipyard Competent Person 3-day training or as required 8-hour Shipyard Competent Person refresher training;
  • Shipboard experience required;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees, management, customers, subcontractors and regulatory agencies;
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint);
  • Capable of working in a variety of physically demanding environments and weather conditions;
  • Able to support climbing, bending, crawling, working at heights, inside of enclosed and confined spaces, heat, rain, wind, etc.;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a government access badge;
  • At least a month of related experience and/or training;
  • Computer skills to include the basics of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Valid Drivers License as position will require driving between yards;

  • Shipyard Competent Person 3-day training or as required 8-hour Shipyard Competent Person refresher training.
