The Community Service Officer positions (Levels 1, 2, and 3) within the Police Department are designed to support various functions of the department while providing essential services to the community. Each level has distinct responsibilities and requirements, catering to different aspects of community service and law enforcement support. The positions involve a combination of clerical work, public interaction, and operational support, with varying shifts and duties based on the level of the officer.

  • Community Service Officer Level 1 - Records: Reviews reports and reconciles UCR / SCIBRS submissions, processes expungements, assists the public by taking reports, troubleshoots calls, performs clerical work, maintains department records, processes reports, migrates reports from the Citizen Online Portal, reconciles SLED validations, assists the public with police records, expunges court-ordered records, maintains collision report data, completes incident reports, testifies in court, answers and forwards calls, greets citizens, assists with FOIA requests, provides reports to governmental offices, and performs other related duties.
  • Community Service Officer Level 2 - Patrol: Responds to non-emergency calls and traffic collisions, operates department vehicles, performs traffic control and parking enforcement, prepares incident reports, investigates non-in-progress calls, testifies in court, performs duties at crime scenes, supports patrol operations, and performs other related duties.
  • Community Service Officer Level 3 - NCIC: Operates the NCIC terminal, receives and enters information, handles non-emergency calls, monitors and manages NCIC records, responds to government requests, handles urgent and routine hits, communicates NCIC criminal history, collects and files NCIC paperwork, enters calls into CAD, performs monthly validations, monitors police radio traffic, handles FBI NICS correspondence, provides information to officers and court officials, assists with phone calls, and attains NCIC certification.
  • High School diploma or GED
  • CJIS certification required upon hire
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license (only for CSO 2 - Patrol)
  • Knowledge of South Carolina Laws, U.S. Constitution, Town ordinances, and NCIC policies
  • Skill in the use of CAD and telephone systems
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Skill in data processing and organization
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
  • Ability to deal tactfully with contacts
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively
  • Skill in using common sense for emergency responses
  • Ability to handle law enforcement duties under adverse conditions
