About the position

The Community Peer Navigator plays a crucial role in supporting parents facing challenges that may lead to the removal of their children from their homes. This position focuses on connecting families with appropriate community resources and services, promoting healthy family relationships, and enhancing parental involvement in their children's care. The Peer Navigator serves as a mentor, providing guidance and support to help families navigate the behavioral health system and access necessary services to keep their children safely at home.

Responsibilities

  • Connect and engage parents experiencing difficulties in caring for their children due to various challenges.
  • Promote community connections and healthy family relationships.
  • Assist families in accessing behavioral health or community services for their children.
  • Support parents in developing self-advocacy skills and promoting individual/family choice.
  • Collaborate with the Public Defenders Mitigation and Placement Unit to develop diversion strategies.
  • Link families to appropriate services and providers based on identified needs.
  • Engage in meetings with community service providers to discuss strengths and barriers.
  • Develop positive relationships with other programs and agencies to meet families' needs.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training, and education.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and integrity.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Certified Recovery Peer Specialist certification preferred.
  • Experience in Miami-Dade system navigation or child welfare preferred.
  • Knowledge of child welfare principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with community mental health and substance use resources for children.
  • Strong knowledge of confidentiality and privilege.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity are essential.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software, including MS Office products.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Haitian-Creole is preferred.
