About The Position

In partnership with The Family League of Baltimore and community leaders, the George & Betsy Sherman Center is implementing the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters ( HIPPY ) program to promote family engagement and early learning in the Cherry Hill and Curtis Bay communities in Baltimore City. The Parent Educator will work alongside the Program Coordinator to conduct weekly 1:1 visits with enrolled caregivers to deliver the HIPPY US curriculum using a role-play model. The Parent Educator will be responsible for collaborating with program staff to provide family engagement opportunities, connect families to the school community, and work with community organizations to provide wrap-around services to families. They serve as the liaison among families, schools, the community, UMBC, and the Family League of Baltimore. Why Work at UMBC? UMBC offers competitive compensation. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Note: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Education: Coursework in Early Childhood Education and/or Family Services or a related field
  • 1 program year (30 weeks) working with HIPPY US in at least a part time capacity.
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with children and families birth to 5.
  • 1-2 years collaborating/working with community organizations.
  • Experience working with South Baltimore communities
  • Experience working with adults in an educational setting
  • Early Childhood Education course credits

Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekly home visits with approximately 10 - 15 families with children ages 2-4 years old.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to plan and implement family engagement sessions, activities, and community events.
  • Support early childhood initiatives in the George & Betsy Sherman Center, local schools, and partner organizations.
  • Maintain detailed logs and records according to programmatic requirements.
