About The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. The Opportunity The Community & External Councils Lead is a trusted institutional bridge between Genentech and the communities most impacted by health disparities. Operating within the External Engagement pillar of the Population Health CoE, this individual designs and sustains external council structures, including the Advancing Inclusive Research (AIR) External Council, and leads culturally grounded engagement strategies that ensure community voices inform every stage of Genentech’s research, clinical development, and population health planning. Reporting to the External Engagement Head, this role is responsible for orchestrating convenings, managing grassroots relationships, and translating lived experiences into enterprise guidance that shapes protocol design, site strategy, and inclusive commercialization. This individual acts as a steward of trust, working closely with industry key opinion leaders, community organizations and advocates, e.g., Promotores de Salud, and influential local leaders, including faith and business leaders, to support the execution of Genentech’s Population Health goals and strategy, and ensure engagement is authentic, bidirectional, and durable. The role is critical in embedding community insight into Genentech’s strategic decision-making and building a feedback loop that reflects not only what is heard but what is changed. By championing cultural fluency, relational accountability, and transparency, this leader ensures Genentech’s community partnerships are not performative but transformative.

Responsibilities

  • Convene and manage the AIR External Council in partnership with Population Science, engaging clinical research leaders and patient advocates to guide inclusive research, and leverage council member insights year-round to inform internal projects and communications.
  • Optimize the council's design, cadence, and effectiveness by analyzing engagement data, including participation, satisfaction, and impact.
  • Build and maintain relationships with trusted community stakeholders to gather compelling real-world patient stories.
  • Design and implement outreach and follow-up protocols that foster respectful, enduring dialogue with historically underserved communities.
  • Develop and implement strategies for engaging and building strong relationships with optimal community organizations and advocates that align with Genentech’s strategic priorities and Population Health outcomes.

  • Serve as an orchestrator by partnering with internal cross-functional teams (e.g., R&D, Medical Affairs, Patient Advocacy) to embed community-derived insights into program planning and execution, ensuring all action plans align with company strategy.
  • Define and implement approaches to measure the impact of community partnerships, regularly engaging with external partners and internal functional teams to ensure expectations and outcomes are met.
  • Architect and lead the end-to-end governance and strategic framework for the Population Health External Council, ensuring its integration into the clinical development value chain and commercial lifecycle.
  • Design and execute a high-impact Publications Strategy in partnership with US Medical, leveraging Council insights to establish Genentech as the industry’s inaugural leader and primary voice in population health.

  • Serve as a Strategic Broker between grassroots community leaders and the U.S. Leadership Team (USLT) and R&D VPs, translating "on-the-ground" community insights into multi-million dollar clinical and commercial strategies.
  • Act as a Catalyst for Organizational Transformation, challenging internal teams to "unlearn" exclusionary corporate practices and move from transactional engagement to long-term relational accountability.
  • Navigate complex, high-risk external dynamics (e.g., data privacy, genomics trust, historical medical mistrust) to protect Genentech’s "license to operate" in diverse global markets.
  • Lead enterprise-wide Population Health Literacy initiatives, educating and influencing senior leaders in Commercial, Advocacy, and Government Affairs to identify new business opportunities and close critical gaps in care.
  • Drive competitive advantage by securing first-mover partnerships with key opinion leaders and community gatekeepers before competitors, ensuring Genentech’s strategy remains scientifically and socially superior.
  • Own the accountability for outcomes, moving beyond functional execution to define the metrics of success for how population health insights drive R&D protocol design and commercial access.
