About The Position

Under the direction of Aurora Water’s Public Relations Manager and in collaboration with the Manager of Education and Engagement, the Water Community Connections Coordinator develops and implements community engagement and water education initiatives that strengthen public understanding and trust in Aurora Water’s programs, policies, and infrastructure investments. This position supports Aurora Water’s efforts to proactively engage residents and stakeholders on emerging water challenges and initiatives, including conservation, drought response, water quality, water rates, Direct Potable Reuse (DPR), and major infrastructure projects such as the Wild Horse Reservoir Project. Working collaboratively with Aurora Water leadership and community partners, this role helps expand water literacy, gather community feedback, and foster meaningful relationships with Aurora residents and stakeholders. The position also supports two-way dialogue with the community to ensure Aurora Water programs and policies reflect community perspectives and concerns. This is a non-supervisory role.

Requirements

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, environmental science, public administration or related field
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of community engagement or related experience (including social science, politics, or other public-facing engagement)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a city vehicle, or otherwise demonstrate ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position
  • Knowledge of Western water issues including water resources/watershed/conservation and community outreach techniques
  • Best practices related to community engagement through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, including public speaking and the ability to present complex information clearly

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in community outreach, public relations, volunteer management, or project management or experience conducting outreach in multilingual or multicultural settings

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement community engagement and water education initiatives that increase public understanding of Aurora Water’s programs, policies, and infrastructure investments.
  • Support outreach and education related to key water issues including conservation, drought response, water quality, water rates, potable reuse, and major water supply projects such as the Wild Horse Reservoir Project.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, neighborhood groups, non-profits, and other stakeholders to strengthen connections between Aurora Water and the community.
  • Represent Aurora Water at community meetings, events, workshops, and public engagement opportunities.
  • Plan and facilitate community workshops, educational presentations, and engagement sessions designed to promote water literacy and encourage meaningful dialogue with residents.
  • Collaborate with Aurora Water Public Affairs and other divisions to translate complex water issues into clear, accessible information for the public.
  • Assist in the development and distribution of public information materials and engagement tools used for community outreach and education.
  • Coordinate with city of Aurora departments and community-based organizations to support outreach at citywide events, environmental programs, and community initiatives.
  • Gather and analyze community feedback through surveys, meetings, and engagement activities to help inform Aurora Water communication strategies and program development.
  • Track participation and engagement metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of outreach efforts and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide guidance and act as a point of contact for Community Engagement Interns or variable-hour outreach staff.
  • Assist with administrative and logistical support for community engagement programs, including event coordination, volunteer management, and tracking engagement activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
