About The Position

The Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to engage diverse communities within Bellevue. The role involves fostering strong relationships with community members, local organizations, and stakeholders to ensure inclusive participation in city planning initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Bellevue's demographic landscape, a commitment to promoting equity and inclusion, and expertise in supporting citywide initiatives and projects in line with the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) spectrum. The Community Engagement Coordinator is a member of the Community Engagement Team, which is supervised by the Community Engagement Manager in Neighborhood Services, a division of the Community Development Department. The Community Engagement team supports city departments for community engagement for major citywide projects and initiatives, including application of Title VI/ADA 504, universal design and equity framework, community engagement plans, survey design, data collection and management, stakeholder mapping and focus on improving outreach with traditionally marginalized communities.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in public administration, communications, political science or a related field.
  • Five or more years of professional-level experience with public outreach, program and large-scale event management, educational programming, community organizing or providing direct customer service with diverse communities.
  • Three or more years of professional related experience in program/event planning, project management or leadership with interdepartmental or cross functional teams.
  • Strong public outreach skills and knowledge of the principles and practices of group process, community organizing, and public participation.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including developing messages for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong analytical skills with both quantitative and qualitative data.

Responsibilities

  • Support additional public engagement strategies and implementation for citywide initiatives to ensure transparency and broaden public input in city decision-making.
  • Create new approaches to community outreach and engagement that apply an equity lens to community outreach.
  • Develop and implement outreach and engagement strategies aimed at building trust-based, long-term relationships with protected groups.
  • Spend significant time in the community, engaging with individuals from protected groups to better understand their needs.
  • Create toolkits, resources, and best practices for city departments to enhance their outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Collaborate with departments to strategize outreach efforts that align with Title VI and ADA compliance requirements.
  • Design surveys and manage data collection to assess community needs and engagement effectiveness.
  • Experienced with event planning, including outreach and logistics, marketing and promotion, stakeholder and community outreach.
  • Adept at providing in-person/virtual/hybrid events, developing class curriculums, communication and marketing materials.
  • Develop and implement metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Use demographic analysis and community feedback to refine and improve outreach efforts.
