About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, with approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The Community Employment Program Specialist, also known as an Adjustment Services Instructor (ASI), is located in Morganton, NC at the WorkSource West Facility in Burke County. This position provides work adjustment training to persons with disabilities to help prepare them for competitive employment. The ASI primarily provides training in a work area which produces a variety of wood products according to contracts with various industries. This position will also assist in providing coverage in other training areas at the facility as needed and assigned by the supervisor, including the third-party program at Foothills Correctional Institution. The DHHS Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities (EIPD) promotes employment and independence for people with disabilities through customer partnership and community leadership, helping them achieve their goals for competitive employment and more independent living in communities statewide.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or business field such as human resources, marketing, business administration, business management, healthcare management, or public administration from an appropriately accredited institution
  • Associate’s degree in a human services or business field (identified above) from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related work experience
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) and four years of directly related work experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required to drive state vehicles

Responsibilities

  • Teaching appropriate work behaviors including productivity and safety awareness in a real work setting
  • Providing orientation, supervision and curriculum and skills training to consumers in the program
  • Evaluating readiness for employment via behavioral observation and productivity measures
  • Managing job set up, monitoring workflow, and quality assurance
  • Documenting provision of services provided in accordance with consumer’s rehabilitation plan
  • Transporting trainees in State vehicles as needed to support aspects of program participation
