About The Position

The Community Coach is responsible for delivering person-centered, goal-driven services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities enrolled in OPARC’s Explore Program. This community-based day program provides social, recreational, and vocational training opportunities designed to promote community integration, skill development, and individual empowerment. Community Coaches facilitate scheduled activities, support participant goals, and ensure participant health and safety through direct care and supervision in community settings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one year of experience in developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and engage individuals with diverse needs and strengths.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License with a clear driving record.
  • Must have a reliable, safe personal vehicle capable of transporting at least three passengers.
  • Proof of current auto insurance meeting minimum legal coverage.
  • Vehicle must pass inspection and be available during all scheduled shifts.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. alone, and up to 150 lbs. with assistance.
  • Must be able to push a wheelchair up to one mile and perform standing, walking, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, and repetitive motions for up to 80% of the day.
  • Must be able to work in outdoor environments, which can include, but is not limited to allergens, excessive heat, excessive cold, excessive humidity, dampness or chilling, excessive noise and/or slippery and uneven walking surfaces and indoor warehouse-type settings that may lack heating, air conditioning, and have concrete flooring.
  • Must maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support, assistance, and training to participants during scheduled community activities in accordance with individual service plans.
  • Implement instructional strategies tailored to individual needs, strengths, and goals.
  • Assist case managers in developing goals and objectives through continuous observation and reporting of participant progress and challenges.
  • Contribute feedback on daily schedules, activity effectiveness, and participant engagement.
  • Maintain visual supervision of assigned participants at all times.
  • Follow established protocols for individuals requiring enhanced supervision, behavioral interventions, and/or Restricted Health Care Plans.
  • Use sound judgment during interventions and participant support.
  • Monitor and report health, safety, or abuse concerns immediately, in accordance with legal mandates and OPARC policies.
  • Ensure appropriate environmental integration during activities, aligned with learning objectives and individual capabilities.
  • Engage respectfully and professionally with participants using verbal, non-verbal, and demonstrational cues.
  • Facilitate conversations to encourage feedback and support individual choice-making.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and timely, including but not limited to: Daily progress notes Activity records Goal tracking Communication logs Vehicle inspections Special Incident Reports Emergency drills Attendance Personal Payroll Entry
  • Drive participants using personal and/or Oparc vehicles, complying with all legal, safety, and agency policies.
  • Prepare and compile necessary supplies and equipment for scheduled community outings before participant arrival.
  • Attend all required trainings and staff meetings.
  • Maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Spend 75% or more of the workday providing direct support to participants, including driving, supervision, and activity facilitation.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and program procedures.
  • Adhere to the proper care and responsible use of oparc issued property, tools and equipment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
