About The Position

The Community Adoptions Program expands Pasadena Humane’s reach by facilitating off-site adoptions, building meaningful community connections, and strengthening organizational partnerships. Functioning as an extension of the shelter, the program prioritizes thoughtfully matching adoptable animals with prospective guardians in the community. By bringing adoptable pets offsite, housing then in partner organizations, transporting them into neighborhoods, and events, the program plays a vital role in increasing visibility, accessibility, and appropriate matches.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or GED/proficiency certificate).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • 2 years experience working in any of the following required: animal shelter, animal rescue, veterinary medicine, animal grooming, animal training.
  • Experience working with the public and individual diverse in age, culture, and in varied settings
  • Excellent interpersonal communication (both written and verbal) skills.
  • Must have a strong knowledge of animal health and behavior including knowledge of dog, cat, rabbit, and other pet breed characteristics, temperament, training, and handling.
  • Strong customer service and skills. Ability to provide excellent service in a fast-paced environment serving clients with differing needs and emotional states.
  • Creative problem solver.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including the shelter system, Microsoft suite and email. Experience with ShelterLuv, Chameleon, and/or Volunteer Matters is a plus.
  • Must have a valid class C driver’s license with a clean driving record and insurable to drive company vehicles, maintained during the course of employment.
  • The ability to drive a 35’ vehicle and successfully complete RV driver training within 90 days of the position start date.
  • Must be able to lift to 50lbs.

  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must come to work on-site regularly and on time.
  • Must be available able to work early hours according to the needs of the department schedule.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays.

  • Bilingual a plus (Armenian, Spanish, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese).

Responsibilities

  • Plays a key role in managing off-site adoptions, namely in partnership with PetSmart Charities and Pet Food Express.
  • Support and maintain strong relationships with community partners to enhance program reach and impact.
  • Serve as a positive and knowledgeable ambassador for Pasadena Humane in the community.
  • Coordinate and support volunteer participation at offsite adoption locations, community adoptions events, outreach events, and emergency response efforts.
  • Supervise volunteers and provide guidance during events and operations.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of animals in the program.
  • Assist clients throughout the adoption process with a high level of customer service.
  • Apply shelter policies and industry best practices to ensure quality animal and client care.
  • Select animals appropriate for offsite adoptions locations, and events pair them with suitable handlers when appropriate. Communicate about animals’ behavior and medical needs as appropriate.
  • Provide clients with information, as appropriate and known, about animals in our population, including behavior, age, breed, sex, and medical history.
  • Ensure accurate and objective notes are entered into shelter software.
  • Respond to email, phone, text, web, or in-person inquiries regarding placement programs.
  • Assist with other programs assigned. Participate as needed in special department projects.
  • Ensure a positive, educational approach to customer service with a goal of educating the public and keeping animals in homes as appropriate. Promote positive relations with the general public, volunteers, and staff while promoting Pasadena Humane’s programs, policies, and philosophies. Address customer complaints.
  • Uphold Pasadena Humane’s mission and contribute to building a culture of philanthropy.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and actively participate in Pasadena Humane’s safety programs.
  • Serve as a leader for volunteers, answering questions about best practices and day-to-day operations.
  • Drive a 35’ vehicle with both human and animal passengers to and from offsite adoption events
  • If called upon, respond to emergencies and disasters.
  • Reconcile cash boxes and process payments in compliance with organizational policies and procedures while ensuring accurate and timely recordkeeping.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
