About The Position

The Communications Specialist is responsible for leading content development from concept through production and delivery, assessing content opportunities, recommending content strategies, working with stakeholders inside and outside the organization and delivering content across channels that meet SBC's business objectives, reinforce our brand and drive brand engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 1+ year to 2 years writing, editing, proofreading or overseeing content development/content marketing required
  • 1+ year creating design deliverables; design experience in Adobe software preferred
  • A born storyteller with superlative and versatile writing skills, and the ability to influence an audience using words and images.
  • Strong visual designer with the ability to adapt to feedback.
  • Ability to use the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (especially, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign) for publication layout and creation of deliverables.
  • Creative thinker who keeps current on industry trends to capitalize on timely opportunities and produce regular, fresh content.
  • Ability to project-manage projects from concept to completion, including helping to define objectives and strategies, developing content, executing programs on time and within budget and analyzing results.
  • Ability to flourish in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to balance compliance needs of industry with creativity and innovation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to motivate and drive collaboration cross functionally without direct authority over those groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Major in Communications, Marketing, Design or a similar field preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience in the healthcare industry preferred

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, format and distribute content for internal and external audiences in support of SBC brand and business objectives.
  • Execute layout of design documents including guides and forms using Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign and other Creative Cloud and web-based applications.
  • Participate in and/or oversee writing, editing, production and distribution of digital and print publications, including newsletters, marketing materials and quality-controlled documents.
  • Craft compelling external communications for the broader organization, generating engaging copy for a variety of media — from ads and emails to blog posts and patient stories — to inspire, educate and engage customers.
  • Create compelling internal communications, coordinating with stakeholders across the organization and ensuring that planned communications are timely and accurate.
  • Participate in and/or oversee writing, revising, routing and training for departmental SOPs and guidelines.
  • Provide organizational support in writing, research, editing, proofreading through close collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic oversight for social media, email, and text/push messaging efforts, ensuring they align with organizational goals and communication priorities.
  • Guide the development of content messaging frameworks for digital outreach, ensuring consistent brand voice and tone across platforms.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to set goals, key performance indicators (KPIs), and best practices for social media, email, and text engagement.
  • Ensure content strategy aligns with donor engagement initiatives, public relations efforts, and marketing campaigns.
  • Identify opportunities for new digital engagement initiatives and innovative outreach methods.
  • Monitor high-level trends and industry best practices, advising leadership on emerging opportunities and potential risks.
  • Support leadership in understanding the impact of digital communications, using insights.
  • Develop and execute a content strategy to ensure organizational content is consistent with SBC brand, style and tone.
  • Serve on the daily Production team to ensure consistent messaging for critical need and daily donor communications.
  • Participate in and represent for Marketing and Communications in change controls for regulatory process communications.
  • Support communications planning for organization-level projects.
  • Convey an understanding of who (audience), what (message), where (channel), when (timing) and why (business purpose) in discussions.
  • Work with leadership to develop messaging campaigns in alignment with the SBC brand and strategic goals.
  • Facilitate departmental content meetings, including brainstorming, discussion and ensuring strategy moves through execution.
  • Produce and maintain departmental tools such as the editorial style guide, brand messaging guide, and communications process documentation.
  • Propose best communications practices to leadership and work in close partnership with stakeholders to ensure content and messaging strategy aligns with organizational strategic plan.
  • Develop and oversee departmental projects and strategies (e.g., Annual Report, PULSE newsletter, DEI-A Calendar, etc.) from concept to completion to meet business objectives.
  • Support data gathering related to communications efforts to inform strategy, build a strong understanding of industry, customers, content channels and competition to best position SBC brand.
  • Conduct content audits and identify opportunities to improve, repurpose or develop new content.
  • Comply with governmental regulations and Stanford Health Care and Blood Center policies regarding health and safety. Observe and support good health and safety practices.
  • Strictly observe privacy and security related policies, procedures and practices to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of medical and other sensitive information pertaining to donors, patients, research subjects, and employees. Act as a responsible information steward and treats information as sensitive and confidential in accordance with federal and state laws and with professional ethics, accreditation standards and legal requirements. Do not disclose protected health information inappropriately.
  • May be required to enter areas where other individuals work with human blood; potential may exist for unanticipated exposure to bloodborne pathogens by splash or spill.
