About The Position

The Communications Specialist will support Education Minnesota by researching, writing, and editing internal and external communications. This role is crucial in promoting the organization's goals of racial equity and social justice, requiring participation in ongoing training and discussions. The position involves collaboration with various stakeholders and the development of communication strategies to effectively convey messages related to education and labor issues.

Requirements

  • B.A. degree and a minimum of three years experience in news reporting, copy editing, or a related communications field, or AA/AS degree and five years experience in a similar role.
  • Valid Minnesota driver's license.
  • Excellent communications/public relations skills, including writing and editing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and work independently under deadlines.
  • Demonstrated video development and editing skills.
  • Experience with website content management platforms and social media channels.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively to solve problems.
  • Accurate word processing and editing skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of education and labor issues, policy, and finance.
  • Policy research experience.
  • Strong photography and video skills.
  • Experience running live videos and virtual press conferences.
  • B.A. degree in journalism or mass communications.

Responsibilities

  • Research, write, edit, and publish internal and external communications.
  • Conduct research on education issues and labor issues and organizations.
  • Provide writing, proofreading, and editing services for various projects as directed by the manager.
  • Collaborate with staff on news conferences and briefings, preparing union leaders and members.
  • Write opinion pieces for major newspapers and other news outlets.
  • Coordinate public events as directed by the manager.
  • Provide communications counsel on union bargaining, member support, and legislative issues.
  • Develop and present training programs and materials for staff and members.
  • Participate in formulating communication and legislative agendas with member committees.
  • Engage in internal and external anti-racist trainings to support racial equity goals.
  • Write articles for the Minnesota Educator and support content on the website and social media channels.
  • Attend various internal and external meetings as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
