About The Position

The Communications Specialist/911 Emergency Dispatcher at the Longmont Police Department is responsible for receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance. This role involves determining the nature and level of assistance needed, dispatching appropriate emergency units, and providing clear and accurate information to callers. The position requires working varied shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and involves maintaining communication with emergency responders and the public.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • At least two years of successful experience involving public contact, preferably in telephone and dispatch roles.
  • Completion of the City of Longmont Communications Specialist Training Program within 12 months of hire.
  • Certifications in Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD), Colorado Bureau of Investigations computer operation, and CPR within 12 months of hire.
  • Keyboarding skills of 35 wpm minimum.
  • Ability to read and understand the English language.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and respond to 911 emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, or ambulance assistance.
  • Determine the nature and location of emergencies, the level of assistance needed, and dispatch emergency units accordingly.
  • Maintain contact with callers in emergency situations until dispatched services arrive.
  • Receive non-emergency calls and provide appropriate information or referrals as necessary.
  • Enter and update call information in a Computer Aided Dispatch system.
  • Coordinate emergency and non-emergency calls with other law enforcement agencies and community service agencies.
  • Monitor booking areas and holding cells through surveillance systems.
  • Assist with the dispatch of public works and utility crews as needed.
  • Perform Emergency Medical Dispatch when necessary according to established procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate record keeping and report preparation.
