About The Position

The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) is looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Communications and Special Events Coordinator. This position blends two exciting areas of work: bringing our biggest events to life and helping share the story of North Carolina’s Community Colleges through media and communications. You won’t be on your own in this role. You’ll work closely with the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing for strategy and support, collaborate every day with our Content and Social Media Coordinator, and partner with our marketing firm to make sure events, campaigns, and communications are polished, consistent, and impactful. If you love organizing details, building relationships, and making things run smoothly, this is the role for you.

Requirements

  • Plan and deliver successful events with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with experience drafting press releases or public statements.
  • Excellent organizational skills and comfort balancing multiple projects.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to work with media and leadership.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evenings or weekends for events.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, media journalism, English, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • knowledge of Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CRM or marketing tools (like Element451 or Salesforce) is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and share press releases, announcements, and leadership messages.
  • Serve as the day-to-day contact for media inquiries, coordinating with leadership on responses.
  • Write and prepare talking points, speeches, and event messaging.
  • Help with newsletters, invitations, and other communications.
  • Track media coverage and share summaries.
  • Work side-by-side with the Content and Social Media Coordinator to keep messaging aligned across media, digital, and social.
  • Partner with the marketing firm on creative deliverables and campaigns.
  • Coordinate logistics for signature events like the State Board Awards Program, legislative receptions, board retreats, and statewide summits.
  • Handle planning details: venues, vendors, volunteers, run-of-show, collateral, and on-site coordination.
  • Support monthly/bi-monthly State Board meetings and committee weeks with materials and logistics.
  • Lead day-before and day-of execution with the Communications team (setup, A/V, signage, photography, volunteers).
  • Partner with the Content and Social Media Coordinator and marketing firm on event promotion, live coverage, and recaps.
