About The Position

The Communications & Public Relations Manager works closely with the AVP of Marketing and Communications to develop comprehensive communications, public relations and crisis management strategies. Implements and evaluates the strategic initiatives and refines programs for best results. The Communications and Public Relations Manager will use innovative communication strategies, including traditional and new media, and work with key university personnel to successfully promote the university and support its strategic initiatives including, but not limited to, enrollment, relationship building and fundraising, while reinforcing the university brand. The Communications and Public Relations Manager serves as the secondary contact in the absence of the Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Enrollment for critical public relations and crisis management issues.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and implements marketing & communications strategies to promote the university’s public image.
  • Leverages relationships with key business, community, philanthropic and community leaders in order to obtain their support for the university.
  • Supports communication for major university-wide events. Works with stakeholders to manage event development and planning.
  • Functions as point person and problem solver for staging, scripting and show flow.
  • Functions as the secondary media contact (behind Vice President of Enrollment, Marketing & Communications) for major media inquiries and the primary contact for most media inquiries.
  • Develops and delivers messaging and statements for media responses.
  • Builds relationships with university faculty, staff and students to identify topics for promotion.
  • Identifies story angles that will be desirable to the media and implements successful strategies to promote them.
  • Forges relationships with area media in order to increase coverage of the university in local and national TV, radio and print communications.
  • Positively positions the university and its staff, faculty and students.
  • Leads strategy and documentation for crisis communications.
  • Works with departments and divisions to update and further develop this material and training.
  • Leads initiative to distribute this information across campus.
  • Develops effective, brand-oriented communications plans that support the university’s strategic initiatives and educate and inform the university community of timely news and events including managing production of the Wesleyan Magazine, creating and sending the campus newsletter and developing the social media content strategy.
  • Implements, plans and measures results of efforts in quantifiable terms and adjusts the plan as needed for success.
  • Can read analytics and gain noteworthy insights from them that lead to breakthroughs and success.
  • Supports executive with development of communication that reinforce the university brand.
  • Supports special events that showcase university programs and accomplishments by working across university divisions to develop communications content, direct video production and write print and digital content to assert the university’s messages and strengths.
  • Creates and implements integrated social media strategies.
  • Leads successful, measurable social media strategies and executions for organic content.
  • Aligns social media strategies with university brand objectives.
  • Helps creates content calendar for promotion of university news and events on social media.
  • Works with team to post and monitor university social media channels.
  • Maintain efficient processes for faculty and staff to submit news stories then facilitates writing news articles and publishing them on the website.
  • Helps maintain quality content on the website by reviewing and approving website content submitted by the campus community.
  • Responsible for working cross-functionally to develop and train departments in the areas of university strategic messaging, executive messaging and developing and writing news content.
