About The Position

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is seeking a Communications Officer to work collaboratively with the Communications team, internal partners, and external partners, including grantees, co-funders, and consultants. The Communications Officer will contribute to the development and achievement of communications objectives that align with the foundation's mission. This role involves implementing an institutional brand and communications strategy, developing programmatic strategic communications plans, and amplifying the voices of staff and grantees. The ideal candidate is a skilled, mission-driven problem-solver with a strong client orientation and knowledge of narratives in philanthropy, U.S. democracy, and economic policy. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

Requirements

  • B.A. degree in communications, journalism, or a similar field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in managing strategic communications.
  • Experience cultivating relationships with media and stakeholders in economic policy and democracy issues.
  • Superb written and oral communications skills; knowledge of AP Style preferred.
  • Strong facility with media research tools and digital platforms.
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to work across diverse constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and competing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Washington, D.C., and/or agency experience.
  • Experience managing external consultants such as PR agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic communications plans for internal clients and communications initiatives.
  • Collaborate with communications colleagues and other internal partners to develop and disseminate consistent messaging.
  • Cultivate and maintain media relationships related to assigned programmatic areas.
  • Develop messaging, talking points, press releases, and other materials as needed.
  • Coordinate timely and engaging digital content such as email newsletters and social media.
  • Anticipate and respond to criticism or crises in partnership with relevant staff.
  • Work with external partners around announcements to elevate strategic goals.
  • Help develop and execute events and convenings.
  • Manage freelancers and external consultants as needed.
  • Contribute to ongoing learning and development about best practices in strategic communications.
