About The Position

The full-time Communications Manager reports to the Director of Communications & Marketing and assists with leading the team responsible for meeting the public communications needs of the organization through high-quality, consistent, and engaging written and visual communications, with a particular focus on legal and federal issues and on habitat restoration and resiliency. This position’s primary responsibilities are 1) assisting with operations and infrastructure of the communications team; 2) leading communications for Save the Sound’s ecological restoration team; and 3) leading communications for Save the Sound’s legal work, including federal regulatory issues.

  • Experience engaging with legislative, administrative, and/or legal processes.
  • Ability to effectively interpret policy and legal topics for a lay audience.
  • Understanding of marketing principles and ability to develop messaging angles.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong skills in Blackbaud’s Luminate Online, or experience with similar CRM and email platforms.
  • Ability to travel (2-4 times/month) within Connecticut and coastal New York.
  • At least 4 years relevant work experience, or a relevant degree + at least 2 years relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead coordination, editing, and set-up of Save the Sound’s weekly email digest to supporters.
  • Assist Communications & Marketing Director in preparing yearly, weekly, and special campaign schedules.
  • Analyze web, email, social media, press, and event metrics to assist in tracking grant deliverables and producing reports.
  • Assist in developing a well-integrated social media strategy and managing the posting calendar.
  • Become the team expert in Blackbaud Luminate Online; develop proficiency in other major platforms used by the communications team.
  • Assist with implementation of advertising campaigns.
  • Track, delegate, and respond to public inquiries.
  • Recruit, screen, and manage seasonal communications interns and occasional contractors.
  • Draft press releases, organize press conferences, and coordinate interviews.
  • Write and publish engaging web content, blog posts, and social media content.
  • Recruit volunteers for events including cleanups and plantings.
  • Help develop, promote, and run webinars and in-person events.
  • Develop action alerts and create factsheets to empower members of the public.
