About The Position

The Department of Surgery, Office of the Chair, is actively recruiting for a Communications Manager.

Requirements

  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and leadership.
  • Working knowledge of digital design tools and templates (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint).
  • Basic understanding of branding principles and ability to apply brand standards consistently.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage timelines, approvals, and documentation.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, handle sensitive information appropriately, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and willing to learn new tools, platforms, and processes as needed.
  • A bachelor's degree and two years relevant program experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manages multiple communications projects simultaneously in the areas of research, education and clinical care.
  • Manages an active communication agenda keeping all related parties up to date on project(s) status.
  • Manage production schedule of all print projects including the annual report, monthly e-news, as well as special event print projects.
  • Create communications and marketing plans for special events.
  • Leads the branding, design and distribution for the Department of Surgery of marketing and communication materials.
  • Leads the strategic development and production of the Department’s annual report, Chair’s newsletter, website, social media and all other communications vehicles featuring the Department’s accomplishments.
  • Supports new faculty onboarding process to optimize timely marketing of new faculty for greatest impact.
  • Creates stewardship pieces for high-profile philanthropic donors.
  • Develops and produces stewardship articles and announcements.
  • Serves as communication liaison between Department of Surgery Development Office and
  • With minimal direction, aligning with creative positioning to write and edit a broad range of content, including print, digital, social, and video, designed to communicate the Department’s strategies, accomplishments and faculty and staff expertise.
  • Create original content and news releases for internal and external purposes. This position reports and researches a wide range of surgical topics related to all the Divisions of the Department of Surgery
  • Reviews and perform updates to Department of Surgery web pages to maintain timely and accurate information with attention to SEO and design. Ensures consistency and compliance with MUSC brand and web guidelines and seeks to optimize content for search engines in support of Department of Surgery web objectives. Collaborates with program coordinators and administration to maintain web pages for a wide range of areas associated with the department.
  • Works with departmental and divisional leadership and others as needed to develop and implement appropriate content.
  • Responsible for managing and maintaining the Departments digital assets.
  • Lead interviewer, writer, and editor of annual report, newsletters, and chair communications and speeches. Serve as Department photographer.
  • Coordinate the conception, execution and production of digital media.
  • Serves as an internal marketing and communication consultant for programs and services.
