About The Position

The Communications Manager serves as the strategic voice of the organization, developing and implementing comprehensive communications strategies that amplify our mission, engage stakeholders, and advance recovery-friendly policies and programs throughout Rhode Island. This role requires a creative storyteller who can translate complex recovery concepts into compelling narratives across multiple platforms. The ideal candidate combines strategic thinking with hands-on execution to build brand awareness, strengthen community engagement, and support our advocacy, housing, workforce development, and member engagement efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field
  • 3-5 years of professional communications experience, preferably in nonprofit, healthcare, or social services sectors
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with ability to adapt tone and style for different audiences
  • Graphic design skills and proficiency with design software (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar)
  • Experience with social media management and content creation across multiple platforms
  • Website content management experience (WordPress or similar CMS)
  • Email marketing platform experience (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar)
  • Project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across teams
  • Understanding of AP Style and communications best practices
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Data analytics and reporting capabilities
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required for travel between locations/sites
  • Schedule may include evening and weekend hours to support special events, programs, and organizational needs

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field
  • Lived experience in recovery or family experience with recovery (highly valued)
  • Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credential, Recovery Coach Professional designation or equivalent
  • Video production and editing skills
  • Knowledge of addiction recovery processes and recovery-oriented language
  • Experience in behavioral health, public health, or advocacy communications
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish or other languages reflecting Rhode Island communities)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies aligned with organizational goals and program priorities
  • Maintain consistent brand voice, messaging, and visual identity across all communications channels
  • Create and manage annual communications calendar coordinating campaigns, events, and program launches
  • Monitor communications effectiveness and adjust strategies based on data and feedback
  • Protect and enhance organizational reputation through strategic messaging
  • Write, edit, and produce high-quality content including newsletters, blog posts, annual reports, fact sheets, and program materials
  • Develop compelling storytelling content featuring recovery journeys, program impacts, and organizational achievements
  • Create engaging social media content and manage organizational presence across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter/X)
  • Design graphics, infographics, and visual content using design software (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar)
  • Produce video content including filming, editing, and production for social media, website, and events
  • Maintain and update organizational website with current, accessible content
  • Develop email marketing campaigns and manage email distribution systems (Mailchimp)
  • Partner with Recovery Housing program to develop materials about NARR certification, resident resources, and housing opportunities
  • Support Workforce Development initiatives with recruitment materials, intern stories, and program promotion
  • Collaborate with Member Engagement team on newsletters, member spotlights, and engagement campaigns
  • Assist Recovery Advocates with policy briefs, legislative alerts, and advocacy communications
  • Create marketing materials for Special Events including Rally4Recovery, Legislative Days, and Recovery Month activities
  • Develop communications for volunteer recruitment, recognition, and engagement
  • Develop targeted communications for diverse stakeholder groups including funders, partners, policymakers, and community members
  • Create donor communications, impact reports, and stewardship materials
  • Manage stakeholder databases and communication lists
  • Track and analyze communications metrics including website analytics, social media engagement, email open rates, and media impressions
  • Prepare regular communications reports for leadership and board
  • Conduct communications audits and assess effectiveness
  • Use data to inform strategy adjustments and improvements
  • Monitor trends in recovery communications and digital engagement
