About The Position

As the Communications Technician I, you will work onsite in Anchorage, AK and will support the installation, configuration, and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure in commercial buildings, communications rooms, and remote field sites across Alaska. Working under the direction of project leadership and senior technicians, you will assist with structured cabling, antenna and tower hardware installation, equipment rack build-out, and telecommunications system turn-up activities, including satellite-based systems.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of construction materials, terminology, and standard field practices.
  • Basic knowledge of tower climbing gear, rigging, and tower safety practices, or ability and willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and job-specific equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate electronic test equipment and specialized telecom/construction tools.
  • Ability to properly use fall-protection systems and personal protective equipment (PPE), including harnesses, lanyards, belts, ropes, and related gear required to perform job duties.
  • Skill in organizing work, managing time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and meeting project deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, follow direction from supervisors, maintain attention to detail, and adhere to project schedules and work rules.
  • Ability to work productively in physically demanding environments and under changing field conditions.
  • Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and participate in team or safety meetings.

  • Ability to travel to remote project locations as required (up to 75%).
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules, including extended hours or rotations as project needs dictate.
  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with co-workers in shared or camp-style environments while maintaining positive morale.
  • Basic knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure components (e.g., antennas, coaxial cable, fiber, mounts, grounding systems) or ability to learn.
  • Ability to assist with installation, modification, inspection, and maintenance of tower and ground-based telecom equipment.
  • Understanding of or ability to follow site access, lockout/tagout, and RF awareness safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform material handling, equipment staging, and site housekeeping in active construction environments.
  • Ability to document work activities, complete field reports, and verify installations against drawings or scopes of work.
  • Ability to identify and report safety hazards, equipment issues, or installation discrepancies.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to perform routine equipment or structural component assembly.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of construction or telecommunications field experience required.
  • Six (6) months of telecommunications installation experience, including indoor cabling or equipment installation.
  • Ability to obtain Tower Safety & Rescue certification within three (3) months of hire and Rigging certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain after hire.
  • Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screenings.

Nice To Haves

  • Remote or arctic environment experience preferred.
  • Industry certifications such as CFOT or BICSI Installer 2 (Copper) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform telecommunications installation and construction activities for extended periods, often in remote locations and adverse or extreme environmental conditions, to support project completion.
  • Follow direction from the Project Foreman and senior personnel while demonstrating initiative and maintaining productivity on the jobsite.
  • Align and cross-polarize existing and newly installed antennas to required specifications.
  • Install telecommunications tower hardware, mounts, brackets, grounding components, and associated equipment.
  • Work with a variety of cable types, connectors, antennas, and telecommunications components.
  • Install telecommunications equipment in communication rooms and rack systems in accordance with plans and standards.
  • Pull, route, secure, and terminate telecommunications cabling within buildings and structures.
  • Label and document all cable runs and equipment in accordance with project and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with RF Engineers to perform system turn-ups, testing, and commissioning of Starlink and other communication systems.
  • Work closely and coordinate activities with other trades to support overall project execution.
  • Apply general construction and telecommunications skills to assist other trades and meet project needs.
  • Complete and submit required project documentation, installation records, and reports accurately and in a timely manner to Project Management and Accounting.
  • Adhere to and perform all duties in accordance with the Company safety program and site-specific safety plans.
  • Promptly report incidents, unsafe conditions, or activities that may affect safety, ethics, or company operations to the Risk Manager or appropriate leadership.
  • Conduct work in a manner that reflects the best interest of the company while on the jobsite or representing STG.
  • Support team operations and assist with training or guiding less experienced laborers when directed.
  • Maintain communication equipment, tools, and materials in clean, organized, and serviceable condition.
  • Perform basic testing, troubleshooting, and verification of cable continuity, signal quality, and equipment functionality using standard telecom test equipment.
  • Assist with grounding, bonding, and weatherproofing of telecommunications installations in accordance with industry and project standards.
  • Assist with tower or elevated structure access activities, including preparation and handling of rigging, hardware, and materials, under supervision and within certification limits.
  • Verify installations conform to drawings, specifications, and manufacturer requirements; report discrepancies to supervision.
  • Support material staging, inventory tracking, and delivery coordination for telecommunications components and cabling.
  • Share responsibility for cooking, cleaning, and general upkeep of field quarters when required.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Maintain required certifications and training mandated by law, customer, or company policy.
  • Work as a cooperative and respectful team member to support a positive work environment.
  • Participate in training, safety meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
