About The Position

The Communications Specialist I (Substitute Appointment) is responsible for receiving, screening, and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls for services such as medical emergencies, fire departments, and animal control. This role involves operating communication systems, dispatching appropriate units, and providing pre-arrival instructions to callers. The position requires effective communication skills and the ability to work under pressure in emergency situations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or its educational equivalent.
• 911 dispatch experience preferred.
• Computer literate with a minimum typing speed of 20 cwpm.
• Valid driver license required at the date of hire.
• CPR certification or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification within 3 months of employment.
• Successful completion of TTY/TDD certification within 6 months of employment.
• Successful completion of National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch certification within 1 year of employment.
• Successful completion of Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification within 1 year of employment.

Responsibilities

• Receives, screens, and prioritizes calls for emergency and non-emergency services.
• Operates multi-line telephone system and enhanced 911 system.
• Accurately prioritizes calls and dispatches appropriate units.
• Utilizes computer aided dispatch system for documenting dispatch information.
• Monitors weather wire and national warning systems; tracks hurricanes and hazardous weather.
• Provides pre-arrival instructions to callers as per guidelines.
• Coordinates activities for all emergency response agencies.
• Monitors enhanced 911 system for incorrect information and documents it.
• Operates telecommunications device for the deaf (TTY) and text to 911 services.
• Interacts with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
