About The Position

Harper College is seeking a full-time faculty member specializing in Communication and Speech for the Communication Arts Department. The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses, including SPE 101 - Oral Communication, SPE 200 - Interpersonal Communication, SPE 210 - Group Communication, SPE 215 - Intercultural Communication, and SPE 180 - Forensics. The position requires teaching 30 contact hours per academic year, serving on committees, holding office hours, and pursuing professional development. Instruction may occur in various formats, including face-to-face, online, blended, and flex. The faculty member will also be involved in coaching a Speech and Debate team, managing competitions, and fostering student development in public speaking and communication skills.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Communication or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience teaching Communication courses.
• At least 2 years of experience coaching a speech and debate team.
• Strong organizational skills for managing a large Speech and Debate team.
• Knowledge of current trends in the field of Communication.

• Advanced degrees beyond the master’s level.
• Experience in teaching introductory speech courses extensively.
• Demonstrated commitment to Speech and Debate Coaching and Forensics team management.

Responsibilities

• Teach a standard load of 30 contact hours per academic year in Communication courses, primarily focusing on Speech 101.
• Serve on departmental, divisional, and institutional committees.
• Hold six office hours per week, with some hours on campus.
• Pursue professional development opportunities related to discipline and pedagogy.
• Manage and coach a Speech and Debate team, including attending competitions and meetings.
• Create and teach upper-division courses within the department.
• Foster a supportive and collaborative learning environment for students.
