About The Position

Commercial Pipe Welder IV is responsible for performing welding tasks for the installation, fabrication, and maintenance of piping and sheet metal systems within commercial mechanical construction projects. This role involves welding, cutting, and fitting metal components for HVAC, plumbing, or other mechanical systems, ensuring the integrity, durability, and compliance of installations. The Welder will work with various materials, including steel, copper, and aluminum, and must be able to weld using different techniques such as MIG, TIG, and Stick welding. This position requires a high degree of technical skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in various work environments. The core areas of responsibility are listed below, however other duties and responsibilities may be required to meet business needs and objectives.In and out of state travel may be required

Requirements

  • Expert-level Welder, overseeing welding tasks on high-profile or large-scale projects with full responsibility for quality and timely completion.
  • Provides technical expertise and leadership in welding operations, ensuring all projects meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Mentors and trains junior welders, leads by example, and ensures that welding work is completed efficiently and accurately on all projects.
  • Strong knowledge of welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and Stick welding.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics related to welding projects.
  • Proficiency in welding tools and equipment, including welders, grinders, cutters, and measuring instruments.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring welds are completed accurately and according to specifications.
  • Knowledge of welding codes, standards, and safety procedures, including those specific to HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing time effectively and completing tasks on schedule.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a welding apprenticeship or technical training program is preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in welding, preferably in a mechanical contracting or commercial construction setting.
  • Certification in welding (e.g., AWS, ASME, or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics for welding and installation purposes.
  • OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in the mechanical contracting or HVAC industry.
  • Proficiency in both pipe welding and sheet metal welding.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience with welding in a multi-disciplinary work environment, such as HVAC, plumbing, and industrial projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform welding tasks for the installation and fabrication of piping or sheet metal components for HVAC or plumbing systems.
  • Use different welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick) to fabricate, assemble, and repair metal components and systems.
  • Ensure that welds are completed to the highest standards of strength, durability, and visual appearance.
  • Cut, grind, and shape metal components as necessary for assembly and installation.
  • Prepare metal surfaces, set up welding machines, and select the appropriate materials, electrodes, and settings for each task.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to understand welding specifications and ensure accurate installation.
  • Ensure welding work is completed according to project specifications, local building codes, and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with project managers and foremen to ensure that welding tasks are completed on time and meet project design requirements.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies to ensure a safe working environment during welding and fabrication.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including welding masks, gloves, and flame-resistant clothing, to prevent injury and exposure to hazards.
  • Follow OSHA and other safety regulations related to welding work, including fire prevention and handling hazardous materials.
  • Ensure all welding equipment is in good working condition and maintained regularly.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or hazards to supervisors and ensure compliance with all safety measures on job sites.
  • Work closely with other trades, including pipefitters, sheet metal workers, and electricians, to ensure successful integration of welding work with other parts of the system.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, foremen, and coworkers to discuss the progress of welding tasks and any issues that arise.
  • Assist with material handling, tool organization, and site preparation to ensure that welding work proceeds smoothly and efficiently.
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and retrofits on existing welded systems, ensuring that all joints and connections remain secure and leak-free.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve welding-related issues in systems that may have been installed improperly or have suffered damage.
  • Perform post-welding inspections, including pressure testing and visual checks, to ensure the quality and integrity of the work completed.
  • Operate welding tools and machinery, including welders, grinders, and cutting machines, safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain welding equipment, ensuring it is properly calibrated and in good working order before and after use.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized, ensuring that tools and equipment are stored safely when not in use.
