About The Position

The Commercial Loan Underwriter plays a crucial role in the loan management process by providing expertise in credit and loan underwriting. This position involves analyzing prospective loan transactions and assessing the creditworthiness of borrowers to ensure that the credit quality standards of the Credit Union are upheld. The underwriter prepares credit memorandums and conducts thorough due diligence and background evaluations before granting credit requests or other approval documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college with an emphasis in finance or real estate.
  • 3-5 years of commercial real estate underwriting and/or credit analysis experience.
  • Direct experience with underwriting new loan originations, multi-family, and commercial real estate.
  • Formal credit training from a national or regional bank preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of physical characteristics and complexities of all Commercial Real Estate properties.
  • Working knowledge of California and Western US real estate markets.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience with Realm Argus is a plus.
  • Successful completion of RESPA, FCRA, Reg B, and Reg Z classes within 90 days of employment.

  • Formal credit training from a national or regional bank preferred.
  • Experience with Realm Argus is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, reviews, and analyzes the creditworthiness of commercial real estate loan originations and existing loans by conducting cash flow analysis.
  • Reviews title policies, loan documents, environmental reports, and other data.
  • Conducts Uniform Cash Flow Analysis (UCA) for owner-occupied commercial real estate financing.
  • Evaluates financial statements, historical trends, projections, management performance, industry, cash flow, capital structure, and collateral analysis.
  • Conducts in-depth review of balance sheets, income statements, tax returns, business plans, and projections presented by applicants.
  • Prepares written summaries of loan terms and conditions along with a narrative explaining business background and risk factors.
  • Completes a risk assessment template for all loans and validates the appropriate risk rating.
  • Identifies risks and assists in structuring the loan to mitigate those risks.
  • Conducts periodic site visitations on commercial properties to identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Assists the Manager of Business Lending Originations in preparing loan proposals for committee presentation.
  • Reviews and recommends improvements to the underwriting and application process.
  • Aids in the training and development of staff.
  • Participates in management projects as needed and assists in achieving the credit union's goals and objectives.
  • Assists in periodic review of funded commercial real estate loans when Business Credit Administration is at maximum capacity.
  • Maintains open communication with existing business members.
