About The Position

The Commercial Lines Underwriting Assistant supports underwriters in evaluating and processing insurance applications for businesses. This role involves gathering and reviewing documentation, entering data into underwriting systems, preparing quotes, and communicating with agents and brokers. The assistant ensures that all submissions are complete and accurate, helping streamline the underwriting process and maintain compliance with company guidelines. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently are key to success in this position. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a clerical support position, preferably in the property/casualty insurance industry.

  • Good PC skills with an emphasis on Microsoft 365
  • Effective attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient proofreading skills

  • Must be able to complete computer-based tasks and utilize office equipment as needed to perform essential job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Commercial Lines rating experience, with the ability to rate one or more of the major lines of business, i.e. Business Auto, Workers’ Compensation, Business Owners, Commercial Property, General Liability, and Umbrella, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Processes automated and manual transactions for assigned Commercial Lines (nine to thirteen) of business, to include quotes, new business, renewals, endorsements, audits, cancellations (notices and return premium calculations) and related activities such as reviewing policies after audits for possible renewal updates, determining fire rates on-line, interim billings, Workers Compensation Bureau criticisms etc.
  • Monitors emails and assigned work for proper handling.
  • Gathers required base rates, LCM, and other details from Reference Connect and other sources, sets up and manually rates (does calculations for) transactions not 100% automated within the policy processing systems for assigned lines of business.
  • Completes manual transactions including forms and Declarations.
  • Assists with Bond tasks, such as new and renewal of POAs, etc.
  • Accesses and records the statistical information necessary for the development of statistical and actuarial reports.
  • Has a working knowledge of multiple systems and can discern inconsistencies between each.
  • Works closely with the CSS to resolve errors and account or agency issues or concerns.
  • Works closely with Business System Support Team to resolve issues after working with CSS.
  • Must maintain entry standards in both quality and volume of work
  • Initiates and follow-ups on correspondence with agents on routine matters as well as for documents and forms as required.
  • Independently organizes and prioritizes workload to meet Company expected timeframes.
  • Adheres to the work group’s expectations and guidelines; fulfills team or work group responsibilities; demonstrates personal commitment to group goals.
  • Puts new knowledge, understanding, or skill to practical use on the job; furthers learning through practice and ongoing feedback.
  • The ability to absorb and comprehend new information and develops skills from formal and informal learning experiences.
  • Actively shares knowledge, insights, and best practices with peers and team members to enhance collective expertise and support continuous learning and development.
  • Provides backup support to TST position when workload dictates.
  • Provides support to Team Leader, Commercial and Personal Lines with distribution of tasks when necessary.
  • Supports the Customer Service Specialist and Commercial and Personal Lines Quality Control and Training Specialist with training less experienced staff as assigned.
  • May be asked to participate on a branch or home office based project team, and given work assignments.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director, Commercial & Personal Lines Processing or Team Leader, Commercial and Personal Lines.
