About The Position

We are excited to announce our search for a full-time Commercial Lines Underwriter! In this role, you will have the opportunity to impact the FrankCrum business everyday by acquiring, developing and maintaining profitable new and renewal commercial lines accounts including, but not limited to workers compensation, monoline and packaged general liability, property, Inland Marine, crime, etc. through timely evaluation of individual risks, understanding market conditions and by providing good customer services for current and prospective clients. Provides guidance and serves as mentor to new hires, Underwriting Assistants, and Junior Underwriters. Reviews beyond individual account transactions and manages assigned agents / book of business to achieve new business, renewal retention, and loss ratio objectives in support of Strategic Planning Initiatives. Reviews new business application information, including STPs for completeness including verification that the exposure submitted is covered within FWCI Underwriting Guidelines. Coordinates with internal and external representatives, agents, and their assistants to obtain complete submission information to include but not limited to gathering missing details, clarify any inconsistencies, and validation of third-party information. Assembles information, analyzes loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks, develops recommendations, and clearly expresses decisions using sound reasoning and judgement in accordance with FWCI Underwriting Guidelines and established rating rules and regulations. Decides whether to approve, deny, or modify insurance policies based on risk assessment and set appropriate premiums, coverage, and deductible limits. Maintains accurate and detailed records of underwriting decisions and assessments. Ensure compliance with documentation standards and procedures. Communicates effectively and respond to agent / external representatives’ inquiries regarding risk eligibility, underwriting appetite, new business, renewals, endorsements, rate changes, coverages, limits of insurance, and system navigation through verbal and/or written means. Supports Business Development Team by participating in telephone, video and in person meetings with agent personnel. Collaborates with other departments, such as claims and marketing, to ensure a coordinated approach to risk management. Reviews audit underwriting alerts to determine what actions and/or adjustments, if any, must be made to the current and expired policies. Reviews Loss Control and Injury Reports that have been completed by the FWCI Risk Management Department and responds with recommendations in accordance with FWCI underwriting guidelines. Reviews existing policies during renewals and endorsements and assesses if any modifications are necessary. Adjust premiums and coverage based on changes in risk factors.

Requirements

  • Keys to success in this position include possessing the working knowledge of commercial casualty underwriting practices, workers’ compensation laws and costs, as well as knowledge of Independent agent and broker distribution and operations.
  • A minimum of three (3) years prior experience in commercial insurance to include agency and/or underwriting.
  • An associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, Business Administration, a related field, or equivalent experience is preferred, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Workers’ Compensation and Commercial General Liability experience desired.
