About The Position

Provides safe, efficient human service and general public transportation of passengers to and from their destinations in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg County area.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of experience driving a commercial vehicle; Or successful completion of Central Piedmont Community College or approved driving school’s CDL Driving Program.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record per County standards.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • Requires County Driving Privileges
  • Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required
  • Depending on the area of assignment, may require a Class A or B CDL with one or more of the following endorsements: H(Hazardous Materials), N(Tank Vehicle), P (Passenger Transport), S (School Bus/Passenger Transport), T (Double/Triples), or X (Tanker and Hazardous Materials)
  • Must be available during regular business hours Monday – Friday 6:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Hiring shift is Monday – Friday, 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM, however flexibility is required to meet business needs, including the potential to start work at 5:00 or 5:30 AM as needed and to work beyond 10:00 AM for required trainings, etc. Hours of operation are subject to change based on business need.
  • Must be able to perform safety sensitive functions.
  • Must be able to navigate through the use of mobile data computer units.
  • Must be willing to assist in providing emergency response needs or provide transportation to special needs shelter in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with people in stressful situations; possess good customer relations and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to think logically to address problems and issues.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, talking and hearing. Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10lbs of force occasionally. Must be able to push and pull 500 lbs and lift a minimum of 40 lbs. The vehicle operator must be physically capable of assisting persons with disabilities.
  • Must possess good communication skills. Must be able to read road maps. Must be able to operate a two-way radio system.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and comply with traffic laws and regulations
  • Employ radio communication with dispatch
  • Read and interpret road maps/GPS system
  • Maintain accurate trip records either on paper or electronically
  • Collect and accurately documents fares and contributions
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance-daily inspections of the vehicle, fuel check, maintaining the interior and exterior cleanliness of the vehicle
  • Assist passengers with boarding, in-transit, and de-boarding as needed
