About The Position

Department 489 is part of the Integrated Power Systems Directorate, and is responsible for developing components for the COLUMBIA Class Main Propulsion System and S1B propulsion plant. This Engineering Supervisor position is responsible for procurement, manufacture, acceptance testing, and delivery of the main propulsion motor (MPM). The MPM is the cornerstone of a revolutionary new submarine propulsion system. This work includes technical responsibility for development of the component design.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. in engineering
  • Candidates for this position must have at least 4 years of related engineering experience
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and be capable of managing under pressure

  • B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical engineering
  • Understanding of processes related to development, qualification, management, and procurement of subcontracted components
  • Demonstrated aptitude for coaching, mentoring, enhancing employee technical skills

Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for the planning, scheduling, and execution of all work necessary to procure, manufacture, and deliver an MPM to the shipyard.
  • This role is also responsible for the ongoing component qualification, including qualification by shock analysis (QSA).
  • This includes the supervision of approximately eight salaried engineering personnel, delegation of job assignments, budget control, schedule management, coaching and mentoring of employees, employee development planning, interviewing/hiring activities, prioritization of work, development of engineering estimates, commitment reporting, and appraisal of employee performance.
  • Long term responsibilities include the management of redesign efforts, the production of all shipset hardware to the shipbuilder to support ship construction, and oversight of system level production testing.
  • Key responsibilities are overseeing the vendor design efforts to ensure the technical requirements are satisfied while adhering to program cost and schedule requirements, and ensuring strong integration with the other components in the propulsion system through system analysis and system level testing.
  • This position requires refined interpersonal skills for regular interaction and close collaboration with the NAVSEA and NNL programmatic and technical communities, various component suppliers, and Electric Boat Engineering, Finance, Procurement, and Program Office organizations.
