About The Position

General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking highly motivated engineers to work hands-on solving deckplate issues for the COLUMBIA Class construction efforts in the Groton shipyard. This role is critical for designing, building, and maintaining advanced submarines, supporting the U.S. Navy and national security. The Construction Support Engineering team provides direct support to shipyard trades and support organizations to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous completion of construction activities, resulting in the delivery of ships consistent with the design intent. Engineers will interface with Operations, Ship's Management, Planning, Design and Engineering, Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), and PMS397, acting as the primary engineering interface for the Groton shipyard construction team. This unique opportunity involves supporting construction through final assembly, test, certification, sea trials, and delivery of the first-of-class SSBN 826 COLUMBIA, the Nation’s #1 defense priority. The D476 Groton COLUMBIA Construction Support Engineering team also provides mentoring and training for engineers new to construction. This is a 2nd shift position located in Groton, CT.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural, Civil, Marine, or Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of discipline specific (structural, mechanical, piping or electrical) engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain a DOD Secret security clearance or higher is required

Nice To Haves

  • Prior deck plate construction experience
  • Familiarity with Electronic Desktop (7G, Work Orders, ELCADD, ERS, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Team Center (CR/CN experience)
  • Prior US Navy or operations experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering oversight and assistance to trade personnel
  • Evaluate emergent shipyard issues that arise during construction and rapidly develop technically acceptable resolutions
  • Interpret design, drawing, and specification requirements
  • Providing direction and evaluation to Groton trades via disposition of CNs and TIR UNSATs
  • Support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery activities for COLUMBIA Class
  • Provide surveillance of manufacturing, inspection, and testing of material in the Groton shipyard
  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering evaluations
  • Facilitate implementation of the design, lessons learned, and process improvements
  • Facilitate discipline specific knowledge transfer to the construction support engineering team
  • Coordinate engagement of design and engineering SMEs in the construction sequence.
