About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police, the College Police Lieutenant adheres to the guidelines as specified by the Coastal Alabama Community College Policy Manual and the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees. The primary responsibility of the Police Lieutenant is the preservation of peace and order, the prevention and detection of crimes, the protection of persons and property under the laws of the State, ordinances, and the performance of multiple tasks relating to the College's welfare and safety. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission Certified (APOST).
  • Valid Alabama Driver's License.
  • A minimum of (3) years of full-time work experience in a law enforcement supervisory position is required.
  • Instructor certification as a law enforcement trainer.
  • Computer skills and knowledge required to complete federal, state, and college reports.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and work under pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum three years (3) full-time experience as a Police Sergeant with the Coastal Alabama Community College Police Department.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the Campus Police Force under the direction of the College Police Chief.
  • Assists the College Police Chief in maintaining records for state, federal, and college reports.
  • Assists the College Police Chief in scheduling police shifts and ensuring police coverage for the College.
  • Assists the College Police Chief by submitting suggestions and research for the College Police Department budget.
  • Assists the College Police Chief in ensuring that all College Police personnel are current in their continuing education and certification requirements.
  • Trains College Police personnel in College rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintains current knowledge of college, local, state, federal, and Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees policies, regulations, rules, and laws.
  • Makes recommendations to the College Police Chief for changes to College rules and regulations as needed.
  • Ensuring that vehicle inspections are completed every month.
  • Assists the College Police Chief in tracking the College calendar and events to ensure adequate police presence for the safety and security of students, participants, and attendees.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of department goals and objectives.
  • Ensuring all Incident/Offense reports are approved and filed.
  • Maintain Clery Act Crime Log.
  • Coordinate emergency response drills and exercises at all campuses in all buildings during each 24-month cycle.
  • Monitors building and grounds to ensure security and safety, and reports any conditions that could result in injury or loss.
  • Monitors students and visitors to ensure compliance with College policies and regulations.
  • Ensures that the College Police's daily logs are current and accurate.
  • Assists the College Police Chief in maintaining good relationships between the College and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Monitors student gatherings on campus, such as athletic events and other activities, to ensure the safety and security of students, participants, and attendees.
  • Conduct and/or schedule annual training for officers.
  • Other activities assigned by the Chief of Police.
  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Maintains a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
  • Provides responsible, appropriate, and satisfactory leadership on campus and within the College.
  • Communicates positively and professionally in all aspects of the position.
  • Attends all employee meetings, College meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and comply with said policies.
  • Serves on and provides information to college committees as needed.
  • Complies with ACCS and College policies, as well as state and federal laws.
  • Ensures the positive promotion of the College and integration of all campuses within the College.
  • Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, and office hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
