About The Position

The Youth Mentor Internship is a hands-on opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of youth while gaining valuable experience in education, social work, community outreach, and leadership development. Interns serve as mentors and positive role models in our afterschool programs, supporting youth through intentional relationship-building, activities that promote personal growth, and a trauma-informed, strength-based approach to guidance. This internship is ideal for students pursuing degrees in social work, education, psychology, child development, or related fields—and for high school students exploring future careers in service and leadership.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in college or university (must meet school internship requirements if for credit).
  • Interest in youth development, education, or community service.
  • Positive attitude, strong communication skills, and openness to learning.
  • Ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must complete a background check, if over 18
  • Must complete Mandated Reporter Training and Sexual Harassment Training
  • Ability to participate in active programming, including walking, playing, or standing for extended periods.
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs for setup and cleanup of activities.
  • Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Build meaningful, supportive relationships with youth participants through mentorship and day-to-day interactions.
  • Model and promote Higher Ground’s values, including kindness, respect, resilience, and responsibility.
  • Facilitate and assist with enrichment activities including arts, games, sports, and discussion circles.
  • Support youth in developing social-emotional skills, peer relationships, and leadership capacity.
  • Participate in community engagement and service-learning opportunities with youth.
  • Collaborate with staff, interns, and volunteers to ensure a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and organized program space.
  • Communicate effectively with team members through channels like Slack and staff check-ins.
  • Attend trainings and staff meetings to reflect on experiences, build skills, and align with program goals
