About The Position

Basic FunctionProfessional learning experience where an undergraduate or graduate student participant gains practical work experience, organization knowledge and business acumen related to a student’s field of study or career interest. Specific duties vary depending on the business need. Internships begin with orientation in June and conclude in early August.  Position will work 40 hours per week, and this position will work 100% on site. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or a recent graduate (within 1 year).
  • Degree program relative to intern assignments, such as Civil Engineering or Construction.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited education institution and successfully completed 24 undergraduate credit hours.
  • GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Degree program relative to intern assignment, such as Civil Engineering or Construction.
  • Knowledge of PC’s and related software, such as MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in managing design consultant and design projects.
  • Performs design review of roadways and facilities projects based on jurisdictional (City of Houston, County, TxDOT) Specification and Code compliance requirements.
  • Attends project kick-off meetings and takes minutes.
  • Coordinates project reviews with City of Houston.
  • Reviews quantity take-off and construction cost estimate.
  • Attends construction progress meetings.
  • Ensures the Requests for Information (RFI) are responded to by consultants in a timely manner.
  • Keeps tracking log updated for incoming and outgoing submittals.
  • Tracks trends on various items and provide feedback for improvements.
  • Assists supervisor in managing projects as needed.
  • Reviews invoices and processes payments.
  • Performs field visits and evaluates existing project conditions.
  • Contributes to departmental goals and objectives.
  • Suggests solutions to business issues and challenges.
  • Attends and participates in meetings.
  • Assists in functional and/or business analytics.
  • Gathers and scrubs data for analysis and reports.
  • Assists with client consulting and support.
  • Assists with writing grants, procedures guide, presentations, training materials, etc.
  • Contributes to a team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
