The Collector I is responsible for working on delinquent accounts daily, corresponding with members in writing, in person, and over the telephone for repayment. This role involves analyzing adjustments and corrections, recommending and initiating collection procedures to protect credit union assets, and assigning losses to outside agencies to increase recoveries.

Requirements

  • Must be bondable.
  • Ability to handle the urgencies and complexities commensurate with the position, arriving at constructive solutions and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Office equipment proficiency.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of six months previous credit union or collection experience.
  • Keyboard proficiency; typing speed 30 WPM.
  • Ability to hear by telephone and in person.
  • Ability to read English; and both speak and write English.

Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming calls and assist members with any problems or concerns regarding their accounts.
  • Assist members with finding a solution to short/long term financial issues.
  • Collect delinquent accounts daily.
  • Work with Collection Agencies on assignments of charged off loans and shares.
  • Maintain updated and accurate documentation of all conversations, actions taken, and arrangements made with members.
  • Process loan modifications for vacations, financial difficulties, unemployment, payroll problems, job changes, disability, etc.
  • Reviews and processes adjustments.
  • Professionally conduct business relations with members, staff, organizations, and vendors.
  • Contact members to collect and resolve overdrawn shares and share draft accounts.
  • Completes and scans approved extensions and notifies member by mail of new due date.
  • Files insurance skip claims, CPI claims, and follow up processing.
  • Performs other tasks, including but not limited to, certain complex clerical duties, as assigned by the Collections Management.
  • Serve as a backup to other employees within the department.
  • Serve as a team member who willingly works with other department staff.
  • Have knowledge of laws and regulations that affect the department’s processes.
  • Collect overdrawn share accounts.
  • Provide financial counseling and possible alternatives to delinquent members.
  • Review corrections and recommend adjustments to member's accounts.
  • Responsible for skip payments and due date changes.
  • Knowledgeable of credit union lending procedures, collection policies, repossession laws, foreclosure requirements, bankruptcy law, credit reporting procedures and all applicable collections laws.
  • Familiar with Federal and State regulatory collection rules and practices.
  • Process and set up repossessions and foreclosures, temporary payment plans, skip payments, automatic transfers, litigation, and repossession dealers, as needed.
  • Answer incoming calls regarding various insurance programs and refer them to the appropriate person.
  • Authorized to sign off on motor vehicle titles.
  • Assist insurance officer in attempts to resolve problems regarding insurance coverage.
  • Recommends charge offs.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • Maintains cleanliness and security of work area, desks, equipment, and all credit union’s property.
  • Fills, completes, files and processes probate claims.
  • Process adjustments due to misapplied payments.
