About The Position

The Office of State Archaeology Collections Manager, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, reports to the OSARC Laboratory Supervisor and is responsible for supporting the management, documentation, preservation, and research use of archaeological collections recovered from archaeological sites throughout North Carolina. The position maintains physical and digital records, supports loans and approved research requests, and assists with laboratory operations and facilities management. In addition, this position works to develop, coordinate, and participate in public education and outreach activities that support the mission of the Office of State Archaeology (OSA). These activities may include lectures, laboratory tours, collection exhibitions, and the administration of social media accounts and web content, as well as other initiatives designed to share the archaeological history of North Carolina with citizens, school groups, university classes, public officials, professional colleagues, and other audiences. Assignments may involve travel and occasional evening and weekend work. The OSARC Collections Manager will assist the Laboratory Supervisor with developing and implementing plans to manage daily activities of the Research Center, including processing incoming collections and outgoing loans; storage, analysis, and documentation of archaeological materials; and maintenance of related records.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution AND two years of archaeological experience; OR bachelor’s degree in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution AND four years of archaeological experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to work Monday - Friday 8:00am -5:00pm
  • Must be able to participate in archaeological field investigations by walking through rough and uneven terrain and working in unfavorable weather conditions including exposure to noise, dust, animals, and insects.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds often with or without accommodation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework and/or professional experience in federal and state laws, regulations, and cultural resource management, particularly NAGPRA and 36 CFR Part 79.
  • Formal collections management training or prior experience in a curatorial facility.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards for digital outreach and archival standards for digital documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365/Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and ArcGIS; strong competency with website management, databases, and documentation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Curation: Identify, analyze, document, conserve, and prepare condition reports for artifacts; ensure appropriate storage and stabilization of material. Limited supervision of temporary staff, interns, and volunteers as assigned to assist with this work.
  • Digital and Physical Records Management: Manage intake, indexing, scanning, labeling, auditing, and organization of physical and digital documentation; maintain databases and relevant inventories; assist with management of environmental review documents when needed; ensure compliance with archival, accessibility, and regulatory standards.
  • Loans and Research: Coordinate research, photography, and condition reporting for outgoing loans; support approved independent research requests through compilation of records and GIS data; and maintain records of access and use for reporting and accountability.
  • Public Education and Outreach: Support and participate in public programs, laboratory tours and presentations; administer website and social media; create digital educational content; respond to professional and public inquiries for identification or technical assistance.
  • Laboratory Operations and Facilities: Maintain laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies in compliance with both DNCR and OSA health, safety, and environmental standards; oversee inventories, and service schedules; submit facilities requests as needed; update laboratory and safety manuals; and assist with purchasing and budget planning.
