The NHMLAC is seeking a Collection Technician, Capital Improvement for our Finance department.  The Collection Technician, Capital Improvement is responsible for the hands on execution of the La Brea Tar Pits research collections relocation.

Requirements

  • High attention to detail and strong manual dexterity.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow complex, multi-step instructions accurately.
  • Commitment to safety and the careful handling of fragile, priceless objects.
  • Basic computer skills necessary for accurate digital data entry.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience handling fragile objects (e.g., in a museum, archive, or gallery setting).

Responsibilities

  • Handle and pack fossil specimens strictly according to established preservation protocols.
  • Apply correct packing methods based on specific specimen type, size, and condition to ensure safety during transport.
  • Digitally document all specimens using provided forms and software prior to packing to ensure accurate inventory tracking.
  • Identify fragile or damaged specimens and immediately report them to the Collections Manager.
  • Inspect specimens for mold and strictly follow all established remediation and safety protocols.
  • Load, label, and weigh transport containers, ensuring proper weight distribution and accurate labeling.
