About The Position
The Collection System Operator position within the Wastewater Department of the City of Haverhill is a full-time role responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the city's wastewater and stormwater collection systems. This position requires a commitment to utilizing current technology, tools, and equipment to ensure the efficient and effective management of these critical systems. The operator will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Collection System Operator and will also provide indirect supervision to lower-grade staff and outside contractors as needed. The role involves a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks aimed at maintaining the integrity and functionality of the wastewater and stormwater collection systems, ensuring they operate in compliance with all relevant regulations and best practices. The operator will be tasked with cleaning, flushing, and removing debris from sewer and stormwater systems, utilizing various methods and equipment to prevent blockages and ensure proper flow. This includes operating specialized vehicles such as industrial sewer cleaning trucks and catch basin cleaning trucks, as well as using hand and power tools for maintenance and repair tasks. The operator will also be responsible for documenting operational statuses, maintenance requirements, and responding to emergencies, including being on-call on a rotating basis to address urgent issues outside of regular working hours. In addition to technical skills, the position requires strong communication abilities to interface with the public and resolve customer service inquiries effectively. The operator must maintain a clean and orderly work environment and adhere to all health and safety regulations. The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects, work in various weather conditions, and navigate confined spaces. Overall, this position plays a vital role in ensuring the city's wastewater and stormwater systems function safely and efficiently, protecting public health and the environment.
