About the position

Skagit Valley College is hiring a manager to expand its coffee shop operations. The manager will be responsible for opening the shop, including preparing grab-n-go/deli food items and opening and closing the espresso stand. They will collaborate with the Culinary Arts program and the kitchen manager on the menu. They will also hire and supervise part-time employees who prepare coffee drinks and deli foods. The manager will also be responsible for organizing coffee service for campus events and occasionally coordinating with caterers for food for lunch meetings. This full-time classified project position works twelve months, 40 hours a week, and is benefits eligible. The current work schedule is Monday - Friday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm. The College may have flexibility with the hours per day and months per year. The final schedule will be developed at the time of hire. The projected hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 7:30 am-2:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am-12:00 pm., with the goal to extend hours as demand grows.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a team of student and part-time employees.
  • Oversee the hiring and supervision of student and part-time employees.
  • Coordinate and oversee training and work assignments.
  • Guide best practices in customer service and food/coffee production.
  • Assign work schedules and manage absence requests.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and recommend corrective action when necessary.
  • Coordinate the preparation and serving of food and coffee.
  • Inspect food for portion size, temperature, and appearance.
  • Direct employees in maintenance of sanitation standards and work procedures.
  • Plan menus in conjunction with Food Service Manager.
  • Coordinate with the Food Service Manager to order food and supplies.
  • Monitor daily use of food, labor, and supplies.
  • Requisition routine repairs and report major repair needs.
  • Open and close the coffee shop.
  • Balance cash and manage daily deposits.
  • Prep and prepare food and coffee.
  • Organize coffee service for campus events.
  • Coordinate with caterers for food for on-campus meetings.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Culinary Arts or related field and one (1) year of food service supervisory experience; Serve Safe Certification and Washington Food Handlers Card.
  • OR High School Diploma, or GED certificate and three (3) years of food service experience, including one year as a lead, supervisor or equivalent; Serve Safe Certification and Washington Food Handlers Card.

Nice-to-haves

  • Barista experience.
  • Experience in food production.
  • Experience working at a coffee shop, especially as a manager or lead.
  • Experience with event planning and event management.

  • Salary is based on Range 43, Step A, $3,728 per month with periodic increments to $4,865 per month.
