Our team at Prairie Lakes makes a difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones Position Summary This position has the option to be Remote, On-site (Watertown, SD), or Hybrid. This position is responsible for coaching and training providers and coding staff on accurate, compliant coding practices. This role ensures documentation quality, supports appropriate reimbursement, and strengthens provider understanding of how clinical documentation translates into coding, RVUs, and revenue. Coding Educator serves as a bridge between providers, coding teams, and revenue cycle leadership, promoting compliance and reducing denials through proactive education.

Requirements

  • Certification: CPC, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, or equivalent required.
  • Experience: 5–7+ years in physician coding, auditing, revenue integrity, or documentation improvement.
  • Knowledge: ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, E/M guidelines, modifier use, payer documentation requirements.
  • Systems: Working knowledge of EMR workflows (EPIC preferred).
  • Skills: Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Clinical Knowledge: Advanced understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medications, and lab values.

Responsibilities

  • Provider Education: Deliver targeted training to physicians and advanced practice providers on documentation, E/M leveling, procedure coding, diagnosis selection, modifiers, and medical necessity.
  • Workflow Coaching: Utilize EMR tools (e.g., SmartPhrases, templates) to optimize provider documentation.
  • Data Analysis: Review documentation and charge data to identify trends, missed revenue opportunities, undercoding, and compliance risks.
  • Training Delivery: Conduct education sessions in varied formats — large group presentations, small group forums, one-on-one coaching, and virtual training.
  • Audit Feedback: Provide clear, supportive, and non-punitive communication for audit findings and improvement plans.
  • Collaboration: Partner with Revenue Integrity, Compliance, HIM, and Clinical Leadership to ensure accurate charge capture and coding compliance.
  • Progress Tracking: Monitor provider improvement, coding accuracy, and financial outcomes of education efforts.
  • Quality Monitoring: Actively participate in quality reviews, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop action plans.
  • Specialty Support: Provide specialty-specific education and assist with onboarding of new providers and annual training refreshers.
  • Assess, design, and implement coding education programs to ensure compliance and optimal outcomes.
  • Organize and report on internal quality reviews; develop corrective action plans with providers.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for coding and documentation issues, recommending workflow improvements.
  • Collaborate with medical staff on education related to new technologies, procedures, and quality initiatives.
  • Conduct research using credible industry sources to support education and policy updates.
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding, compliance, and documentation guidelines and trends.
