About The Position

The Coding Manager at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital is responsible for establishing and maintaining an efficient and timely coding, auditing, and education process while ensuring the accuracy and quality of coded and abstracted information for all patient types across physician services and campuses. This role involves providing ongoing education to coders, physicians, and other clinical staff, serving in a management and advisory capacity to the Coding staff, and working effectively with leadership to improve coding services.

Requirements

  • Proven knowledge base in complete and accurate clinical documentation in all healthcare settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in acute care hospital and physician/clinic coding and billing practices.
  • Knowledge of conventions, rules, and guidelines for ICD-10, CPT, and Evaluation & Management coding systems.
  • Knowledge of multiple reimbursement systems, including MS-DRG and APC.
  • Knowledge of clinical documentation improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to establish rapport with physicians and healthcare practitioners.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills for problem solving and change management.
  • Prior use of 3M encoder and Epic software is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management/Health Information Technology or related healthcare field.
  • 3 years of managerial experience in Health Information Management or Coding.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the Hospital Coding Department to promote steady workflow and data integrity.
  • Manage the daily operations of the Physician Practice Coding Department to promote steady workflow and data integrity.
  • Collaborate with and educate physicians on coding and documentation guidelines.
  • Research coding questions and provide coder feedback; ensure timely correction of coding errors and edits.
  • Ensure coding audits are performed concurrently and that the areas being audited are updated in conjunction with department policies.
  • Oversee the monitoring of aging and DNB accounts to ensure timely coding and performance within established benchmarks.
  • Conduct regular audits and coordinate monitoring of coding accuracy, productivity, and available clinical documentation.
  • Review audit reports for accuracy and implement corrective action plans.
  • Facilitate and coordinate educational programs regarding coding and clinical documentation best practices.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees; manage workflow, appraise performance, and resolve complaints.
  • Conduct trend analysis to identify patterns in coding/documentation practices.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities within the Coding department and implement solutions.
  • Review claim denials and rejections related to coding and medical necessity issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide Coding staff with updates on annual, quarterly, and semi-annual ICD-10-CM/PCS and/or CPT code changes.
  • Maintain strong communication with Directors and business partners regarding unbilled activities.
  • Mentor team members to encourage personal and professional growth.
  • Encourage ongoing skill development by providing continued education opportunities.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to lead the team in resolving systemic issues.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures for coding compliance.
