About The Position

The Coding Compliance Specialist at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center is responsible for ensuring compliance with coding and medical record documentation standards. This role involves reviewing coding of professional services records, conducting internal audits, and providing education to staff and providers on coding practices. The specialist will also support billing staff and ensure accurate submission of medical claims, while maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and certificate of successful completion of a coding exam is required.
  • Certification as a procedural coder (CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCSP), accredited records technician (ART), or registered health information technician (RHIT).
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with Electronic Health Records and specialty coding.
  • At least two years' experience directly related to the duties specified in the job description.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual/bicultural proficiency in Spanish/English is desirable.
  • Additional education and training in medical office experience is preferred.
  • Billing experience and chart auditing experience are preferred.
  • Community health experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Review electronic health records to assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes based on coding principles and official guidelines.
  • Monitor billing performances to ensure optimal reimbursement while adhering to regulations prohibiting unbundling and other questionable practices.
  • Conduct internal chart audits and encounter form reviews to ensure compliance with CMS, AMA, and certified coding standards.
  • Interact with patient care providers regarding billing and documentation policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Create reports of audit findings and provide recommendations to improve documentation practices.
  • Lead or assist in developing education programs for providers around coding.
  • Research inquiries from providers and patients about fees, reimbursements, and denials.
  • Ensure the integrity of HCPCS, CPT, and ICD-10 codes in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding credentials and regulations by attending conferences and workshops.
