Requirements

  • Valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Competent use of a personal computer for report writing, data entry, and research.
  • Knowledge or experience in housing or property maintenance, repair, or inspection.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain moderately complex records and reports.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations with firmness and tact.
  • Willingness to work a schedule that includes Saturdays.
  • Availability for emergency situations as designated Emergency Critical.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to present ordinances and regulations at public meetings.
  • Knowledge of State and local housing and zoning ordinances.
  • Competence in using Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Sungard HTE Code Enforcement software.
  • Ability to accurately record observations of property conditions.
  • Experience in housing maintenance practices.
  • Good judgment in applying departmental rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect commercial and residential structures for compliance with housing and zoning codes.
  • Research records such as plat sheets, plans, and previous code violation proceedings.
  • Prepare reports of findings and initiate correspondence with occupants and owners.
  • Educate and assist owners and occupants to achieve compliance with codes.
  • Initiate court action against non-compliant owners and coordinate legal actions.
  • Serve as a witness during public hearings regarding code violations.
  • Make decisions requiring considerable technical judgment.
