About The Position

This classification is responsible for technical work of low to average difficulty in the performance of municipal code and zoning inspections and performs related work as required. Duties and responsibilities include enforcing codes and zoning ordinances, answers complains from citizens related to municipal codes and zoning, and providing compliance information to citizens. Under moderate supervision, reports to Building Official. The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Requirements

  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in customer service, ordinance and codes enforcement, and/or public relations in a government environment.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must have a High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Tennessee Drivers License.
  • Must be able to correctly wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and enforces the provisions of federal, state and local building codes and zoning ordinances.
  • Receives and investigate complaints relative to municipal codes and zoning ordinance such as may relate to noise, odor, setbacks, weeds, trash, junk cars, placement and size of signs, sign location, building additions and other issues related to codes and zoning.
  • Provides information concerning requirements of codes and zoning ordinances, problem areas with owners and contractors.
  • Orders correction of violations and re-inspects for compliance.
  • Attends Smyrna Municipal Court as needed to enforce municipal code and zoning violations that have not been corrected.
  • Reviews and approves or denies applications for sign permits and assure continuing compliance.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of laws/regulations pertaining to codes, zoning, and inspection activities, and of changes in municipal codes or ordinances; reads professional literature; attends classes, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.

  • Pay begins at $52,881.38 annually for a Codes Inspector and is based upon applicable experience.
  • In addition to the base salary, this full-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus as well as a longevity bonus.
