The Coder for Provider Practice Hospitalist at Sanford Health is responsible for ensuring accurate coding and documentation for medical services provided in various settings, including clinics and Ambulatory Surgery Centers. This role involves reviewing medical records, assigning appropriate codes, and supporting providers in understanding coding guidelines and compliance. The position requires a thorough understanding of coding standards and the ability to work independently while contributing to team efforts.

  • Serve as a resource for providers regarding covered indications and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain understanding of National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and relative value units.
  • Support Medicare and Commercial Carrier workflows related to coding and denial review.
  • Monitor and validate physician charge capture.
  • Review medical documentation and assign appropriate modifiers and codes according to classification systems.
  • Provide accurate ICD-10-CM coding of diagnoses and HCPCS and CPT coding.
  • Audit medical record documentation to ensure compliance and appropriate reimbursement.
  • Convey coding guidelines to improve accuracy in medical record documentation.
  • Associate degree in Health Information Technology or Certification in Coding required.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and procedural terminology, ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding schemes.
  • Certification such as RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CPC-A, CCS, CCS-P, CCS-H, or COC required.
  • Specific coursework in medical terminology or human anatomy/physiology is preferred.
