SCOPE: Inpatient coder with 3+ years of experience coding in a teaching/trauma level 1 facility. Required to have a minimal of 3 years of Trauma experience. Project uses Epic and 3M, experience with both systems are required. Schedule is flexible within reason, Monday - Sunday; any time between 6am - 10pm EST. Core Coding Knowledge & Technical Skills Expert-level knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS , including official coding guidelines and quarterly updates Strong proficiency in MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodologies , including impact on SOI/ROM and reimbursement Extensive experience coding high-acuity inpatient cases , including: Polytrauma and complex trauma admissions Critical care, ICU, and surgical cases Multi-system organ failure, sepsis, and shock Demonstrated ability to accurately capture: Principal diagnosis selection MCC/CC identification Secondary diagnoses affecting quality and reimbursement Complex procedures and surgical approaches Advanced understanding of Present on Admission (POA) indicators and trauma-related exclusions Experience with clinical documentation improvement (CDI) concepts and physician query standards Trauma Level I–Specific Experience Proven experience coding in a verified Level I Trauma Center or equivalent high-acuity facility Strong understanding of: Trauma activation levels and trauma registry concepts Injury mechanism and intent (ICD-10 external cause coding) Multiple injury sequencing and trauma-specific coding scenarios Ability to interpret complex operative reports, trauma flowsheets, and consultant documentation Knowledge of trauma quality indicators , including mortality, complications, and case mix index (CMI) Academic / University Health System Environment Experience coding in a teaching or academic medical center with: Resident and fellow documentation Attending attestation requirements Split/shared visits and teaching physician rules Ability to navigate complex documentation workflows involving multiple specialties Familiarity with research-driven documentation and evolving clinical practices Analytical & Compliance Skills Strong attention to detail with consistent accuracy in high-volume environments Ability to apply coding clinics, official guidelines, and payer-specific rules Experience supporting: Internal and external audits RAC, payer, and regulatory reviews Appeal preparation and education Understanding of downstream impacts to: Case Mix Index (CMI) Quality metrics Risk adjustment and public reporting
