About The Position

MaineGeneral Health is seeking a skilled Coder II to join our team. In this role, you'll ensure accurate coding and billing by reviewing documentation, assigning appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes, and collaborating with providers to resolve discrepancies. This role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic healthcare environment, using your expertise to ensure accurate coding, compliance, and optimal reimbursement.

Requirements

  • Certification by AHIMA or AAPC (Required).
  • 3-5 years of surgical coding experience (Preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal).

Responsibilities

  • Reconcile patient lists, census, and discharge reports to ensure complete and accurate documentation and charge capture.
  • Abstract key non-coding elements necessary for billing, such as surgeon details, surgical episodes, and discharge dispositions.
  • Manage and correct billing discrepancies, ensuring claims are accurate and complete while reporting missing information to providers or administrators.
  • Review complex visit documentation from outpatient and ancillary areas (e.g., Emergency Department, Cancer Center, Outpatient Surgery, Observation, Infusion) to assign appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes.
  • Assign and sequence accurate codes for 3-5 outpatient and/or ancillary patient areas in clinical systems, including necessary modifiers.
  • Query providers when needed to clarify documentation, ensuring coding accuracy and compliance with guidelines.
