About The Position

The Coder Hospital Lead oversees all coding related activities. Their primary responsibilities include maintenance of coding quality program, education of staff, training of new staff and of contract staff. Assigns ICD-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes, modifiers, selection of MS Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG), APR-DRG, EAPG, and Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APC), and coding for severity of illness. Coordinate and implement projects and personnel-related activities. Works under the guidance of the Supervisor. Interacts with medical staff, nursing, ancillary departments, provider offices, and outside organizations.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree
  • High School (Required)
  • CCS - Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association
  • ICDCM/PCS Trainer w/Certification within 90 Days - Sarah Bush Lincoln
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - American Health Information Management Association or Registered Health Info Administrator (RHIA) - American Health Information Management Association - American Health Information Management Association

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Supervisor on setting departmental objectives, planning equipment needs, designing systems and procedures to meet changing requirements, and evaluation of departmental services.
  • Maintains, develops, and ensures adherence to policy and procedures under the guidance of Supervisor/Director.
  • Oversees assigned departmental operations in Supervisor’s absence.
  • Conducts educational meeting with staff.
  • Develops procedures and Standard Work Instructions (SWI) for educating, training, and follow-up.
  • Coordinates the collection and reporting of coder audit results and education.
  • Works with coders and coding auditors/trainers to ensure appropriate documentation for hospital services. Reporting of coders quality outcomes will be sent to applicable management staff.
  • Coordinates the collection and reporting of productivity stats and quality reviews.
  • Demonstrates ability to code all types of encounters.
  • Maintains coding quality program. Responsible for staff production report. Ensures that staff is kept current regarding coding requirements. Ensures data quality and optimum reimbursement allowable under the federal and state payment systems. Conducts audits and report outcomes.
  • Monitors staff performance quality through audits and initiates or makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Monitors the daily work status of area of responsibility, responds to operational/staff concerns and implements appropriate measures of follow-up. Supports staff and provides backup of job functions when necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining DNFB encounters and dollars at established standard. Works closely with internal and external staff to minimize DNFB encounters.
